So, in honor of B Corp month, each week in March I'm going to shine the spotlight on one of my favorite fellow B Corps! Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business we can't forget Pasco. Tri-Cities has a Huge history which also makes Washington State University & WSU Tri-Cities great schools. Cheering for Columbia Basin College, I know they have a great Computer Science Program (I know we are always looking for Recognition with Job classifications. Ag is a Little bit different, but We always need Ag Science 🧪 in Labs - @lambweston @conagra @darigold - more science can be done in these Labs - means they should also have more jobs - could mean a trip to WSU & WSU Tri-Cities could be important- WSU Tri-Cities does Bio-Fuels with PNNL. Ag can have a Huge overlap to a Lot of Stuff.)and have had a great board. Congrats. It all involves money or funding, hope it all works out.

Hot off the press - via Winston Churchill Trust (Australia) MEDIA RELEASE 25 January 2024 Churchill Fellow Nick Rose calls for $500mn edible garden fund in the wake of #costofliving and #supermarket pricing enquiry   Following today’s announcement by Prime Minister Albanese addressing the escalating cost of living and concerns over supermarket pricing, Churchill Fellow Dr Nick Rose advocates for a comprehensive approach that includes increased support for #communitygardens and urban farms as a sustainable solution.   Nick has called for a major expansion of community gardens nationally as an investment in #foodsecurity, but also as a preventative #publichealth measure, calling for a $500mn Edible Gardening Fund.   "Community gardens are literally the grassroots solution to the challenges posed by market concentration and rising food prices. They empower individuals, strengthen local communities, and contribute to food security," Nick adds.   Nick asserts that community gardens play a vital role in addressing not only the economic challenges faced by citizens but also the broader issues related to health, environment, and community empowerment.   "Community gardens are not just about growing food; they are about growing resilient and connected communities," states Nick. "In the face of rising costs and concerns over supermarket practices, community gardens present a practical and empowering response."   In a recent conversation addressing these critical issues, Nick underscores the importance of community gardens and urban farms, particularly in the context of the ongoing review led by Craig Emerson.    Nick acknowledges the significance of the supermarket review, emphasizing the need for a multi-faceted approach to tackle the challenges faced by consumers. He suggests that community gardens, operating on a non-commercial, volunteer-led basis, can and do provide a sustainable alternative to traditional food supply chains.   Nick draws parallels between the review's focus on supermarket pricing and the impacts of market concentration on farmers. He points out that community gardens represent positive and democratic community-led responses to market failures and government inaction in various sectors.   As part of their strategy, Nick and his team at Sustain: the Australian Food Network call upon key decision makers and government figures to advocate for the funding and support of a nationally coordinated network of community gardens and urban farms. Today the Federal government provided some vital relief to low and middle income earners in Australia, through a long overdue revision of the deeply unfair #Stage3 tax cuts. As the #supermarket pricing inquiry begins and the Government considers its response to the national #foodsecurity parliamentary report (Australian Food Story: Feeding the Nation and Beyond), I reiterate the call we made two and a half years ago following the 9,140 responses to the Pandemic Gardening survey: for the establishment of a $500mn national Edible Gardening Fund to massively expand #communitygardens and #urbanagriculture across Australia. We spend more than $200 bn every year on dietary-related ill-health and declining mental health. Why don't we spend a tiny fraction of that - less than 1% - investing in positive, community-led, preventative health programs and projects? $500 mn would create over 3,000 meaningful jobs, provide dignified food security with high quality food to tens of thousands of Australians, build community and create urban infrastructure for climate resilience. It's a no-brainer!

Did you know snakes are crucially important much as biblically they're cursed creatures by God. Snakes serve as predators and preys in an ecosystem. So, they make biodiversity. Also, there is a potential medical role in a venom, like having anti-tumor and antibacterial property. Snakes are pets for some people and are tourist attractors for economic purposes. Today, I learnt how important are snakes, we should reduce our fear with them, but rather know how to manage them. Don't hurt a snake, it will not hurt you. Everyone has been asking for it since we founded Hooked in 2019 and now we are so proud to be the first one in the industry to share our findings. There has been concern of the digestibility of so-called 'Ultra processed' food along the way for most Alt protein companies in the industry. Questions from consumers like 'how much protein is actually bio-available for me even you claim 20g protein/100g on the nutrition table' remained a puzzle and kept haunting us. We were anxious to find out and very excited to collaborate with Lund University for Akkelien Jansen and Gabriella Heurlin to do their master thesis with Hooked. To be honest, I was quite nervous before the first digestibility data came out, nobody had done this before and what if it's really low? The results turned out to be overwhelmingly good, our plant-based tuna processed via high moisture extrusion (HME) could yield 76-77% of digestibility while real canned tuna is 84%. Worthy mentioning this is not only applicable for plant based seafood, physically any Alt protein products such as plant based chicken, cheese, sausage, snacks etc. that went thru similar process such as TVP, HME, fiber spinning and shear cell technology could take our findings as a soundable reference and do a DIY test on this rail. I am very glad to be Gabi and Akkelien's industry supervisor for this project and am impressed by their perseverance and endeavor put into it. For my connections interested in food policy and and sustainable food systems

As I look back on the journey that led to my abstract being selected for the Undergraduate Research Competition at IFT FIRST in Chicago, I'm filled with a mix of emotions - gratitude and a tinge of disappointment. Immense gratitude for being given the opportunity to showcase my work and that tinge of disappointment because I couldn't make it 😔 . My mini-project which I did in my 3rd year on "Assessing Food Safety Knowledge and Practices among Food Service Providers on the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, (KNUST) Campus" was more than just a project; it was a labor of love, a test of perseverance, and a reminder that every late night and early morning was worth it. Being part of this prestigious international conference was a dream come true, and although I couldn't attend due to lack of funding, I'm humbled to know that a potential was seen in me and my work will be shared with the global Food Science Community. This moment was a reminder that our passions and dedication can take us further than we ever imagined. This experience has taught me to appreciate the small wins and to keep pushing forward, even when things don't go as planned.
