Happy Earth Day Everyone! While not a specifically "wine" Holiday, this Holiday is very important to Wine. We've had the opportunity to meet and speak with winemakers and vignerons, who not only make delicious wine but, through their farming methods and beyond, are looking out for planet Earth! Our documentary project "Can Wine Save the Planet?" will tell their stories. These stories, we hope, will inspire other vineyards, wineries and farms to take up these agricultural methods that work in harmony with the planet. Biodynamic and Regenerative Agriculture methods create healthy soil, which sequesters carbon and mitigates climate change. But these methods go further, incorporating biodiversity and looking out for all the humans involved in the process. 🌍 Celebrating World Water Day, we spotlight Heineken Spain's 2023 milestone: achieving the status water balanced across our breweries in Spain. What exactly does this status being water balanced mean? For every liter of beer we produce, we consume 2.9 liters of water:   - 1.5 liters are retained in the beer and evaporate during the brewing process. - 1.4 liters are used during cleaning and maintenance processes. This water undergoes collection, treatment in our wastewater plant, and is then returned to the watershed. Achieving the water-balanced status in our breweries involves compensating for the 1.5 liters, contained in the beer and evaporated during brewing.   How do we compensate those 1.5 liters…….. do we produce H2O? No, we don't create water; we champion water stewardship projects devised by water engineers. Working closely with local experts and authorities, our projects aim to bolster watershed health through improved filtration and water retention techniques.  🌱 Highlighting our commitment, initiatives in:              -          Doñana Natural Park in cooperation with the Junta de Andalucia -         Albufera Park in cooperation with the Regional Government Valencia -         Paracuellos, Belvis de Jarama in cooperation with Madrid Government exemplify our efforts to restore ecosystems, combat invasive species, replanting native trees, enhance soil, repair neglected floodgates and restore floodplain, contributing significantly to our mission. Our vision extends beyond being water balanced towards being water-positive, by maintaining AND expanding our stewardship efforts in the watersheds where we operate, underscoring our dedication to preserving this essential resource. NZ wine was represented in Montreal at a two-day conference on climate change and the challenges for viticulture. Interesting takeouts for me include: ✨ ‘25% of emissions come from exporting and 75% from production’ said Meagan Littlejohn (SWNZ- Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand) New Zealand wines represent an environmentally sound choice despite the distance they often travel, low production emissions more than compensate for those from transportation. ✨ Agriculture, which includes viticulture, has the potential to sequester 41% of its carbon emissions through proper soil management. ✨Carbon sequestration is one of the main goals of regenerative agriculture, a trending topic in the world of wine ✨ Improve soil, increase biodiversity and restore ecosystems. ‘It is the only system we found that isn’t necessarily more expensive than conventional farming’ said Michel Gassier from Famille Gassier ✨ Joseph Brinkley from Bonterra Organic Estates, the largest Regenerative Organic Certified (ROC) winery in the US said ‘the strength of ROC is the social aspect,’, it includes a strict audit of how employees are treated including an essential living wage’ ✨ Regional certifications were recognised as having the most significant potential to accelerate change with SWNZ admired by industry peers as the ‘gold standard’. Coming from a place of continual improvement - NZ Ethical Employers looks forward to working with SWNZ to strengthen the people side of the voluntary standard. From the archives: In the spring of 2020, just as we were about to kick off our year-long campaign for Pyramid Brewing, the world abruptly shut down. We paused production and quickly had to rethink our approach to capturing content safely within just thirty days. With the world transformed, we leveraged our new understanding of how beer and social distancing could still bring people together. Our campaign highlighted emerging trends like fishing, paddleboarding, front-yard fire pits, and backyard birthday parties. By that summer, we launched a new campaign for Pyramid Brewing, embodying the spirit of "Refresh. Reconnect."
