I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve successfully attend the Maintenance & Reliability Trending Talks and Hot Topics training program by RES Global. 🎓✨ Here’s a glimpse of the insightful sessions I attended: Maintenance Contracts and Contractors Management by Eng. Ahmed Abdel Zaher: I gained valuable insights into effective contract management strategies, ensuring smooth operations and minimizing risks. Inventory and Spare Parts Control with Eng. Ahmed Hussein: Learning how to optimize inventory management and ensure timely availability of spare parts was eye-opening. Influential Problem Solver featuring Ms. Rania Lelah: I honed my problem-solving skills and discovered innovative approaches to tackle maintenance challenges. Maintenance Cost Control and Optimization led by Eng. Mohamed Elsayed: Understanding cost-saving techniques and maximizing efficiency is crucial for any maintenance professional. Maintenance Workforce Management and Development by Eng. Alaa Omar: I explored workforce development strategies, fostering a skilled and motivated team. At P2SAC, we're committed to learning from the past to prevent future incidents. One of our pivotal on-going capstone projects for Summer 2024 is: Learnings From Global Process Safety Incidents and Their Prevention: This project involves a comprehensive analysis of approximately 300 global major process safety incidents, examining data such as date, location, industry type, fatalities, damage, and root causes. By building a detailed database of incident investigations, we aim to derive actionable insights to enhance safety protocols and prevent future occurrences. This comprehensive analysis will hopefully contribute to the development of best practices and standards in process safety.  P2SAC has published several papers in this area including: ‘Process Safety Incidents Across Fourteen Industries’, Process Safety Progress, April 2020. Our work is essential in driving process safety improvements across industries. P2SAC serves as a hub for conducting fundamental research and providing expertise in process safety-related standards and best practices. Flixborough 50 It did not occur to me as a 13 year old in 1974 watching the aftermath of the Flixborough explosion on TV that 50 years later I would be using the event in my lectures on the principles of: * Management of Change * Inherent Safety * Engineering standards * Flammability & explosion hazards * Consequence modelling & analysis * Vapour Cloud Explosions * Root cause analysis We are indeed fortunate to live in a country where safety is a priority and the COMAH Regulations are enforced. There are many lessons to be learned from Flixborough and all of them are still relevant today. In particular, and from experience, the Management of Change is often neglected where it comes to changes in the organisation and resourcing of key personnel. During a recent DSEAR training course presented to 20 mainly Chemical Engineering delegates we (my co-presenter and I) asked how many had heard of Trevor Kletz. Of the 20 only three had heard of Kletz and only four showed awareness of the principles of Inherent Safety when relating to process design and operation. My co-presenter & I are, it would be fair to say, in the twilight of our careers, both having over 40 years experience as Chemical Engineers and are attempting to pass on our accumulated learning to the new generation. It appears, however, that the teaching of the principles of Inherent Safety is more than somewhat lacking in our university education system. Which brings us around to another one of Trevor Kletz’ pieces of wisdom, namely that “organisations have no memory”. “Organizations have no memory” As the operating, maintenance, and engineering personnel are promoted, retire, take vacation, are absent, OR job duties are reallocated, critical safety information and expertise is lost. – Trevor Kletz - Lessons from Disaster: How Organizations Have No Memory and Accidents Recur, 1973, PRE-DATING Flixborough.
