🎥 Hey LinkedIn Network, I Need Your Help! 🎥 Our Whole Child Health team, led by Christina (Jeffords) Rodriguez, is embarking on an exciting project to create short videos aimed at educating youth and school staff about sensory preferences. We're currently on the lookout for 5 enthusiastic middle school and high school students (with parent permission) nationwide who are passionate about sharing their perspectives on sensory preferences. The virtual interview questions will be a casual chat where students can share their thoughts on sensory preferences, personal experiences, and what they wish teachers knew about supporting students like them! Greeting Connections! Really excited to share with you all my recent casestudy on improving the user experience of the Mindwren platform, a great initiative taken up by I'mbesideyou Inc. The platform is especially made for individuals struggling with problems like overthinking and who seek help but may be hesitant due to stigma or privacy concerns. The platform is designed to provide confidential and personalized mental health support to such individuals. We need to propose ideas to improve the user experience of the Mindwren platform for college students. Redesigning some aspects of the platform and introducing some features that can help improving the user experience of the platform and increasing the number of users onboarding as well as user retention on the platform. We invite you to be a part of a significant research study on the experiences of discrimination and its impact on mental health. 🎯 Purpose: Our mission is to gain a deeper understanding of how discrimination affects the behavior, emotional well-being, and mental health of South Asian students, including aspects like eating habits, anxiety, stress, and mood. 🧐 What's Involved: This study comprises two parts. Part 1 involves an online survey covering demographics, discrimination experiences, and emotional/physical health. In Part 2, selected participants will join a follow-up discussion via a HIPAA-compliant version of Zoom, where they can share their experiences and feelings related to race, belonging, and coping mechanisms. 📚 Eligibility: To participate in both parts of the study, you must: - Be over 18 years old - Identify as South Asian - Be a 1st, 1.5, or 2nd generation immigrant - Be fluent in English - Be a full-time or part-time undergraduate or graduate student at one of these four CUNY universities: City College of New York, Hunter College, The Graduate Center, or Borough of Manhattan Community College - Have no history of severe mental illness, including psychosis and current manic episodes Your participation is highly valued and your responses will contribute to a better understanding of these important issues. Can we talk about “previously validated scales” for a minute? You know, those scales that everyone uses because some smart person published a peer-review article about it using a bunch of circles and lines? Let’s be clear - when creating a survey, it's always a good idea to do a lit search to see whether there are previously validated scales that assess the constructs you're interested in. These scales are often built by professionals with specific expertise and tested thoroughly. However...not all previously validated scales are actually valid for all samples. Here are three questions you can ask to evaluate whether a previously validated scale is actually a good fit for your sample: 𝟭. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲? Let me guess...a bunch of middle income white kids? If the sample the scale was validated on does not match the sample you want to survey, it’s likely not a good fit. 𝟮. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻? Young people’s cognitive and emotional functioning changes in leaps and bounds - a scale built for elementary age children is likely not a fit for tweens (and vice versa). And no - you should not take that scale validated for adults and just “tweak” the language. 𝟯. 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲? If there’s no indication that young people were involved in the process of developing or piloting the scale, you run the risk of using a scale that is statistically valid, but does not accurately reflect how young people think about or talk about a concept.
