July 14th is Shark Awareness Day. Did you know there are 500+ species of shark and that they can live 30 - 100 years. One Greenland shark is believed to be at least 272years old! World shark populations have declined 70% in the last 50 years - mainly due to overfishing, such as the barbaric practice of slicing off their dorsal fin then leaving the animal to die. The fin is the key ingredient in shark fin soup.

Why are male burros/donkeys called jacks and female burros/donkeys called jennies or jennets? The name Jack is a derivative of the name John. Going back through the centuries, John is a pretty ubiquitous name, and, over time, the name Jack became synonymous with anything male. Thus, you get names like lumberjack, jackrabbit, bootjack, jack-of-all-trades, and even Jack the Ripper. And, yes, jackass too, since ass is the proper name for the animal we are discussing. The terms “jenny” and “jennet” is a bit harder to pin down. Going back to the 1500s the name “jenny” is associated with female animals and birds, for example a female wren would have been called a jenny wren. The term “jennet” has a couple of origins. It refers to a small Spanish horse breed. But it also was an Old English girls name that was a derivative of John. In either case, sources aren’t clear or definitive about these terms’ use in association with donkeys. We might never know the origin but it is fun to do the research. Tell us - do you have a favorite burro fact? Thank you to @pjkaszas for this interesting background on burros and their names! Rabbits are charming and gentle animals, but as a prey species, they can become easily scared! So, if you're introducing them to new people, it's important to tread carefully. For introducing rabbits to people, some tips include: 🐇 start gradually - let the rabbits observe individuals from a distance and choose to approach when they are ready 🐇 move slowly and calmly and allow them to sniff your hand and get used to your scent 🐇 always be very gentle 🐇 reinforce positive experiences with treats For more tips to help with a smooth intro for both bunnies and people, check out our blog! https://rspca.au/KGN3GR

All animals deserve compassion. ❤️ Most people find it easy to open their hearts to animals like kittens and puppies. But what about our other animal friends, like spiders and snakes? Those animals deserve compassion too—all beings do. Consider this your invitation to share Reiki with the wild animals you encounter (safely, of course). You can use caution and still create a space of unconditional love and connection with them. ✨ You can learn more about Reiki for Wild Animals here: https://lnkd.in/g_tZVtCY

Happy Fish Fact Friday! Did you know that red king crab can live to 20 years old or more? As juveniles, red king crab will molt multiple times per year, but when they hit maturity, they begin molting less often. Mature females have been found to continue molting annually until the end of their lives. By contrast, mature males do not molt annually – instead many molt only once every few years. Not molting every year means crab fishermen sometimes encounter what are termed “oldshell” crab, which have dirtier looking shells and often barnacles living on their carapace and legs. Even though many of these crab are legal size to keep, they are less attractive and therefore command a lower price in the market.
