Employing a comprehensive methodology for characterizing PRC influence, the study scrutinizes Chinese influence-seeking activities across a spectrum encompassing traditional media, social media, overseas Chinese networks, pro-China associations, geoeconomic channels, and geostrategic domains of influence. The findings reveal that while PRC influence in Thailand has undeniably burgeoned, it is not a trigger for alarm in the corridors of power in Bangkok. Thai strategic culture has cultivated a degree of familiarity with, and developed a set of countermeasures to regulate, the extent of Chinese influence within Thailand. United Nations Military Advisors Visit Roberts & Ryan I made some new friends last week – an old colleague and friend of our firm, Mark Otto, hosted a group of UN Military Advisors and brought them over to check out our NYSE trading floor operation. Such nice people, and they’re doing important work. *I didn’t see any of them on LinkedIn and for privacy, it’s probably best to leave their names out of this anyway, but I wanted to list their titles: Colonel UK Royal Marines – Military Advisor to the UK Permanent Mission to the UN Colonel US Army – Military Advisor to the US Permanent Mission to the UN Colonel Australian Army - Military Advisor to the Australian Permanent Mission to the UN Lieutenant Colonel Canadian Army – Deputy Military Advisor to the Canadian Permanent Mission to the UN Colonel New Zealand Army - Military Advisor to New Zealand’s Permanent Mission to the UN A friend of mine that I met through the Council on Foreign Relations, Mike Rauhut, ICF PCC, held this same position at the UN several years ago and worked with the gentleman I met here – they know each other well – it’s a small world. I had the opportunity to attend the cocktail reception they hosted for Mike when he was leaving the UN, so I got a firsthand look at how important their work is. While each of these senior military leaders represents their own country, they develop relationships with their counterparts from other countries. They get to know each other as people – talking about everyday life (kids, etc.) – not political posturing. This helps them have real conversations around important topics since they know each other as people, not as adversaries. #China🇨🇳 Two new personnel promotions earlier this week -- elevation of Wang Wenquan (王文全) and Hu Zhongming (胡中明) to General on Christmas Day. #Wang is political commissar for PLA's Southern Theater Command, and Hu is #PLA Navy commander. So new Defense Minister Dong Jun's appointment, plus the elevation of this new crop of top military officers with Navy and South China Sea experience is a sign of China seeing South China Sea as a new priority area of geopolitical contestation between China and the US. Recall U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan's quote: "intense competition requires intense #diplomacy". Well, China just promoted 2 new generals who can intensely compete for naval supremacy in SCS, & named a new DefMin from Navy to pursue intense military diplomacy. Domestically, on personnel tradition, choosing Dong Jun as new Defense Minister also follows existing tradition of appointing non-Army generals to lead China's military diplomacy. China has a tradition of appointing generals from non-Army backgrounds to the Defense Minister-ship (to deal with foreigners). Heads of relatively technical agencies such as the PLA Rocket Forces and the General Armament Dept (that does procurement) are the usual favorites.

Project Udbhav ‘Project Udbhav’ has been launched by the Indian Defence Minister, aiming to integrate ancient Indian strategic wisdom into modern military pedagogy. The project, in collaboration with the United Service Institution of India (USI), seeks to create an indigenous strategic vocabulary based on India’s philosophy and culture. the project The project will explore under-explored strategic thinking, statecraft, and warfare from classical texts and enrich military training curricula like Chanakya’s Arthashastra (strategic partnerships, diplomacy, soft power projections, etc.) and Thirukkural (Ethical conduct in warfare). It will focus on educating military leaders, informing senior commanders, and creating a knowledge pool for scholars and defence personnel. Ancient Indian texts and historical military campaigns and leaders will be studied to connect traditional knowledge with contemporary military practices.
