Are you making good use of Tax-free childcare? Tax-Free Childcare is available to working families to help you save on your childcare costs. However, many people may not be making use of this provision and with the Easter break soon upon us, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is encouraging families who have not yet signed up to consider doing so. Tax-Free Childcare can be worth up to £2,000 annually per child, or £4,000 if your child is disabled. It can be used to help pay for approved childcare for children aged 11 and under, or 16 and under if they have a disability. 5️⃣ principles to tackle disadvantage in Wales' childcare system. This week, we published our new report in partnership with the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF), calling for a radical new childcare offer. In the report, we show how the principles developed by the JRF and the Coram Family and Childcare must be applied to childcare in Wales to tackle disadvantage. We’ve set out the evidence and solutions to make childcare in Wales: • Affordable: Childcare must be affordable in order to enable parents to work. • Quality: Provision must be high quality in order to improve outcomes. • Accessed: Disadvantaged children need to be able to take up early education and childcare. • Family-focused: Childcare must support a positive home-learning environment. • Integrated: Childcare must be a pillar of a wider support system. Great news for working parents! The UK government is expanding its free childcare scheme to make childcare more affordable and accessible. Starting September 2024, eligible working parents of children over 9 months old can receive 15 hours of free childcare per week, increasing to 30 hours per week from September 2025. Additionally, the Tax-Free Childcare scheme offers up to £2,000 per year for each child to help cover childcare costs. These initiatives aim to ease the financial burden on families and support working parents. The single biggest factor behind the decision to return to work after having children is the cost of childcare provision. The cost of losing mothers who are forced to choose between returning to work or looking after their children is incalculable for the economy. A mother’s touch in the workplace should never be underestimated as it brings balance and understanding and a nurturing approached as opposed to a competitive, get ahead environment that can be difficult for some to operate in and have their abilities noticed and improved. The investment at this early stage should reap dividends for many years to come and give a return much higher than the initial investment.
