Hurricane Beryl has kicked off the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season by wreaking havoc in Houston, Texas, flooding hundreds of homes and knocking out power for millions. Many believe the Category 1 strike was simply a teaser of much bigger waves to come, not just for Houston, but any coastal regions in the U.S.. Anyone in the CPG community knows how strict retail receivers are about shipments arriving on-time in-full. Even in the midst of a Category 5 hurricane, not getting product where it needs to be when it needs to be there is a great way to compromise retail relationships and chances of dominating the shelf. It's the middle of hurricane season which means I need to write my annual update on the Florida Hurricane Cat Fund and whether it can survive another year. Even with no storms last year, the outlook is sobering. The only way FHCF can remain viable is if there are no storms for a long time. Of course, if there are no storms for a long time, then the insurers didn't need FHCF cover, so it is quite a paradox! If you need it, FHCF cover may not be there for you. If you don't need it, there is a chance it may be there in the future. That's quite the sales pitch! Today's post is part I of II. Things you should know: As our first hurricane of the 2024 storm season approaches Texas, here are a few pointers for those living in the impacted areas: Leave the area before the storm if you have the means. Things left behind are just things and can be replaced. Loved ones cannot. If you decide to stay: Do not touch downed power lines. Never operate a portable generator indoors. If clearing debris, always wear protective gear. Stock up on plug kits for your car tires and learn how to use them. After a strong storm, roofing nails and other debris will be everywhere. During the height of the storm, avoid opening the outer doors to your home as this can cause pressure changes within the structure and can cause damage to windows, roofing, etc. There is a lot more, but this is a good start. Be safe!!
