ZillaZeus, new early variety 🍒 Nature often surpasses man. Thanks to a chance gem mutation identified by Terry Fewel in a Bing orchard in Washington state US, a new early cherry variety with excellent production performance and very good quality has been selected, patented and marketed with club variety. There are those who invest tens of thousands of dollars in a breeding project without getting great results, and there are those who walk through a row of cherry trees and realise that nature has perhaps given them a fortune. The profession of plant breeder is undervalued by society due to a lack of awareness of its importance for our #foodsystems . Thanks to #plantbreeding, new resilient varieties are constantly being developed to maintain or increase yields in the face of adverse challenges caused by climate change, like drought. This is a heartwarming story about one plant breeder's journey and passion, working with farmers to provide new and better varieties to increase food security and improve farmer's livelyhoods.

Exciting news! I have been awarded the FCRH Fall Research Grant to fund my independent research under Dr. Lewis. Did you know that globally, tomato plants are the second-most commonly grown vegetable? I'm excited to be conducting research on plant-promoting growth bacteria's ability to help protect tomato plants from Fusarium wilt. Specifically, my project will investigate arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi's ability to aid plant-growth promoting bacteria, Stenotrophomonas rhizophila, in alleviating Fusarium wilt's symptoms and promoting growth in infected tomatoes. I will be conducting this research using the forest at Fordham's Louis Calder Ecological Center, which provides access to native soils containing EcMF, AMF, and Fusarium oxysporum!!

At the 2024 GDM Seeds Global Research Meeting, I had the opportunity to present the following work through the poster session: "How to Optimize a Testing Network for the Selection of New Cultivars?" A large portion of scientific studies addresses the estimation of the GxE component. However, little is discussed about the environmental trajectory that a given lineage has traveled over time leading to its selection. Optimizing a testing network is not simply about making environmental classifications and identifying environments with repeatable GxE. The optimization of the testing network involves commercial strategic issues that direct the best genetics to specific sets of environments. It is like a ship adrift: the specific combination of locations can provide direction to the breeding program and increase genetic gain. It is a great pleasure to be part of this initiative at GDM.
