Brett Smiley’s Post

It seems impossible to try and condense into one neat LinkedIn post the essentials of a formative professional experience. Nevertheless, after co-founding Sports Handle 6-plus years ago and joining Better Collective in 2019, I will give it a try because yesterday marked the final day of my formal association with both, as I will soon embark on a new business adventure (more on this next week). Above all, today I am feeling grateful: grateful for the all the mentors, friends, collaborators, characters, and even critics I have encountered on a journey from nearly quitting sports media altogether to having built with duct tape, hustle, and humility a publication that has repeatedly broken stories of national relevance and became a major revenue driver. During my time at Better Collective I also had the pleasure of building and overseeing the team at US Bets, where collectively with the Sports Handle squad there remains the most talented and selfless team I have ever worked alongside. Parting from this group is unequivocally the hardest part about stepping aside: Jill Dorson, Eric Raskin, Matt Rybaltowski, Mike Seely, Chris Altruda, Gary Rotstein, Jeff Edelstein, and Bennett Conlin. Widening the picture, there’s scores of people that I owe thanks for acts big and small. And there’s not enough space on a non-premium account to list them all, but I will name some key mentors (some adopted by force), friends, and confidants who above all taught me the business and were generous with their time, demonstrated what integrity looks like, and lent an ear when I sought one: Dan Zucker, Adam Small, Cal Spears, Richard Schuetz, Brianne Doura-Schawohl, Chris Grove, John Holden, Danielle Boyd, Bill Grinstead, Daniel Back, David Sharapan, David Purdum, Ryan Rodenberg, Jack Andrews, Jay Kornegay, Robert Walker, and the folks at SBC News and CDC Gaming Reports. Thank you guys. And of course my dear friend and Sports Handle co-parent Jill Dorson requires a paragraph of her own. She’s quick to give me all the credit but deserves a lot more for the growth and success of the publication than she may ever appreciate. Jill is a relentless, conscientious, and principled reporter who made everyone on the team better. Once the manager of a bed and breakfast, she discovered that she’s quite a good managing editor/point guard, too. I will be forever grateful for the relationship we built and experiences shared, plus all the baked goods I know she will send me on holidays and birthdays even if we are no longer immediate colleagues.  Thanks, JD. That’s all for now. More from me next week on what’s next.

A humble thank you to the man who took a chance on me after reading exactly two industry-related articles of mine. You'll be missed.

Smiley, you're an industry pioneer who built Sports Handle from the ground up with grit, doggedness, and determination. Your TEN Action 24/7 feature on alleged credit card fraud, money laundering, and illegal proxy betting is objectively one of the best stories in the space since the PASPA decision. Thanks again for taking a chance on me. Best of luck with your next venture, man, going to miss working with you. We still have three weeks to come up with our annual Cardinals' wager for the season: Clayton Tune, regular season passing attempts: O/U 21.5

I’m sad to see you go, and I’m sure it was not an easy decision but I have full confidence you will crush whatever the next adventure is. Thank you for everything! You and several others mentioned in this post gave me my first shot in this industry, mentored me and I could not be more grateful. Good luck! And keep in touch!

I'm at a loss for words, but Adam Small sums things up rather nicely and concisely and I'll take solace in knowing our paths will cross again soon.
