Lessons Learned at Lighthouse Park, North Vancouver! 🌊 Here are some epic fail moments turned into valuable lessons from our photo outing! Here’s the scoop: 1️⃣ Pre-trip Prep: 🗺️ No, I didn’t just stumble upon this stunning view accidentally (though it might seem like it). Lesson one: Always check your route and know how long it’ll take to get there. Trust me, Google Maps can’t always save you from those unexpected detours! 😅 2️⃣ Family Roll Call: 🚗 Ever felt like a chaotic scene from a movie as you unload the car? Lesson two: Make sure your squad is ready to rock ‘n roll before you even think about opening those doors! Otherwise, you’ll be herding cats instead of enjoying the scenery. 🐱 3️⃣ The Great Food Disaster: 🍔 So, about that paper bag dinner... Lesson three: Don’t be like me and carry your gourmet feast in a flimsy paper bag. Spoiler alert: it won’t survive the journey, and your meal might just lose your snacks to the sea. 4️⃣ Illuminating Insights: 💡And last but not least, lesson four: Bring a headlamp! Because getting lost in the dark is only fun in movies, not when you’re trying to find your way back to your angry family. So there you have it, folks! Free advice, worth as much 😎, for all you aspiring bikepackers out there. Headed onto the Great Allegheny Passage Conservancy's GAP Trail next weekend, to enjoy a night at Round Bottom on the Youghiogheny River near Perryopolis PA and then further down the trail to the Eastern Continental Divide, to Frostburg MD, through the Big Savage Tunnel, and then that long descent into Cumberland MD. In the past, I have used a Big Agnes Inc Fly Creek 2-man backpacking tent, which is a great tent, though it is not freestanding and if you are like me and are packing a little extra weight and girth these days, I'd suggest it's basically a one man shelter. This time around, I intend to use a Mountain Hardwear AC 2 high altitude tent, because it will still be pretty cool in the evening, and I'm not so much worried about massive ventilation the way I would be at the height of summer. And it's a BOMBPROOF, free standing single wall shelter that is ridiculously compact and light for the unbelievable protection it provides. In future, I may use my other Mountain Hardwear Trango 2-man mountaineering tent, if I'm traveling with a companion and can split the load across two bicycles. As an alternative, I'd suggest for consider the newly released MSR - Mountain Safety Research Hubba Hubba BikePack 2-Person tent - it's more expensive than the comparable Big Agnes Inc Fly Creek, but it is free standing, which means a lot if you spend a lot of time on the road and are wiped out when it's late in the day, and you just want to get the tent up and relax. Well, as I say, it's all free advice, and worth as much. Belated Cheers to Fluid Line's New Year! (Yes, you read that right!) Remember that epic New Year's lunch the higher-ups had? Turns out, someone (cough, Phill, cough) forgot to send over the photos in time, and we all know vacation photos are sacred! But fear not, fellow Fluid Liners! We're finally catching up on the festivities with a glimpse of the merriment. THE LITTLE DIRT TRAIL Not far from where I live is this little dirt trail that connects Genting Lane to Tannery Lane. The trail is on land that doesn't belong to any of the private industrial buildings around it. Everyday, hundreds of people working in the area take a 3-minute walk through this dirt trail as a link between their offices and a few food-courts within the Genting industrial estate as part of their daily lives. If the trail wasn't here, one would have to make a 20-minute detour on foot to get to those food-courts. During the rainy season, that's what people had to do, because the dirt trail becomes a muddy swamp, all but impassable to people unless they wore waterproof boots. You can imagine that this causes distress on a workday to some people, who has to worry about how they’re supposed to get lunch on a daily basis. And then one day, somebody from somewhere organized the resources and time to nail together hundreds of wooden planks, and put them piece by piece into a walkway along this entire trail, so that it is never impassable even when it rains. There was no notice, no sign of government intervention, no insider information in the chatgroups about who did it. It was just done, and suddenly the people of the estate never have to step in mud again. I think of the nameless individuals who made this happen. People who make the world a better place one project at a time, even when it takes considerable resources and effort, even when nobody asked them to do so. I admire these people, and look forward to seeing the natural spirit in most of us to make improvements to our world. I hope this is not just the case for people from my generation. I hope these people exist in my children’s generation. I hope the human spirit for good never weakens. Who you surround yourself with matters! - We have a finite amount of time on this planet and I do not wish to waste any of it. - The people I choose to give my personal time to are a very select group people who have proven themselves worthy of my time and effort. - There's lots of people in this world that will waste your time. They'll suck you dry of emotional strength. They are leeches of joy and opportunity. (We've probably all experienced this at some point) - I've spent my lifetime curating the perfect group of high quality beauties that fill me constantly. - They are there during my struggles when I just want to crawl in a corner and be alone. They will not let me be alone! They are there when I want to celebrate the successes and joyful times in which I do not desire to be alone! - They are my life long friends at this point. - We don't waste time! We maximize it and use it as a tool to get the absolute most value out of our time on this planet! - These will be the people you'll see me going for coffee with in 50 years! - Who are you surrounded by?
