At Goldman Sachs, we're dedicated to well-being and performance, and investing in mental wellness is a critical component of sustained outperformance. I am excited that we're committed to destigmatizing mental wellness and providing resources. Meditation introduced by GS Wellness has enhanced my life, making me a better colleague, leader, collaborator, husband, and friend. I use these tools at work and promote balance and boundaries for colleagues and clients.

Thrilled to share my incredible journey to Kenya last week, where I had the privilege of visiting the Ngare Ndare Mixed Day Secondary School alongside family, friends, and clients. Their motto, "passion to perform," truly struck a chord within me. The trip reminded me of the profound concept of Ikigai, a Japanese term encapsulating the joy and purpose found in fulfilling one's true calling. Witnessing the transformative power of education, we worked towards enhancing the school's infrastructure, introducing cutting-edge technology like electronic whiteboards, constructing new classrooms, and empowering passionate teachers. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Tusk and The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy for partnering their support with #GSGives. Their commitment and collaboration have played a vital role in enriching the lives of many throughout the continent. Furthermore, I want to give a special shout-out to my amazing wife, who, over the past decade, has run over 20 marathons and inspired me to tackle my first half-marathon while visiting Africa. Her incredible dedication and perseverance have been a constant source of inspiration for me, and her support and encouragement mean the world to me. It's through such endeavors, driven by collaboration and shared passion, that we can inspire others to imagine a brighter future. Each of us is capable of making a significant impact. As a passionate traveler and explorer, this experience has reaffirmed my belief in the potential for education to shape lives and build a better world. Excited to share my recent podcast episode with Andreas von Hirschhausen, CFA, CAIA of The Wall Street Lab where we covered several topics, starting with embracing the unknown, building confidence to explore your potential, the importance of asking questions and staying curious, and my role as head of Prime Brokerage Sales at Goldman Sachs. I also delved into my unconventional yet determined approach to career and leadership, my framework for impacting clients, and my 19 Cs for success in finance. What resonated with me was our discussion about building human yet performing teams and the need to have interests outside of work to maintain a healthy work-life balance. From my own experiences, I've learned that success is not just about working hard but also about taking care of yourself and your team. The London Business School is embarking on a $200 million fundraising campaign to transform LBS in its next phase of growth. I enjoyed participating in a recent fundraiser for my alma mater and speaking on a panel alongside Christiana Riley and Josh Gruss on thriving in times of disruption. We discussed everything from navigating the complex macro headwinds, innovating our relationships with clients at Goldman Sachs, and how LBS helped me further hone my leadership style. Thanks to Niro Sivanathan for moderating!

This month’s first accomplishment for me was becoming a certified #MentalHealthFirstAider from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing. Among other organizations, Goldman Sachs sponsors the training program to provide information and confidential support to team members who are experiencing mental health challenges or are concerned about the mental health of others. I’ve been a big proponent of Mental Health = Mental Wealth; from practicing the Japanese art of Shinrin Yoku to holding mental health wellness sessions with my team and clients, as a leader, you cannot effectively lead if you’re about to run on empty. You cannot effectively provide empathy to others if you cannot give it to yourself. This is why my colleagues around the world are receiving training to observe changes in behavior and serve as a critical link to early intermediation – we now have over 250 trained Mental Health First Aiders globally. Access to trained Mental Health First Aiders, who can support their colleagues at every level and every division of the firm, is a critical element of this.

It’s no secret that Jennie C. Jones’ artwork is incredible and meditative – and yet, her work continues to amaze me! This week, I hosted with over 70 clients and colleagues for a beautiful evening celebrating Jennie’s exhibit at the Guggenheim Museum. From her playful asymmetry work to the subtle folds of color she uses in her paintings, all of her pieces deepened my understanding of her work. I want to thank Jennie, Asahi Pompey, and everyone who came out for an evening of visuals, sound, and the power of the #culture.

I was deeply honored to return home to my alma mater, Radford University in Virginia, to deliver the Winter Commencement Address to the Undergraduate #Classof2021. The university prepared me with confidence to be and have a voice in all rooms, whether furthering my education at the London Business School, being a partner at Goldman Sachs, or a board member for the Guggenheim Museum. Radford reinforced the strong principles and work ethic that I was brought up with. I never looked back until 28 years later, when the school that gave me the tools and the fortitude to be who I am today invited me to deliver this year's keynote address to the next generation of leaders.   Congratulations to all the graduates; know that as you embark on your journey outside of the classroom, no obstacle, high or low, will get the best of you when you learn to love yourself.
