Maybe CDN needs to rethink its recent trips to China and follow the US example re tariffs on made in China wind/solar/EVs/heatpumps built with coal, children in Africa & Russian oil and gas! Climate change is a global issue to be solved, not a cynical national political opportunity to be taken advantage of that generates only attention with no global emission reduction. For CDN it would be much better to focus on the export of inexpensive cleaner than coal SK uranium, ON CANDU & BC/AB LNG to help the world reduce its emissions!

In June edition of The Economist I was quoted in in the article “China’s giant industry in the turmoil”. With Vijay V. Vaitheeswaran we discussed the impact of manufacturing overcapacity on solar industry overall. As I explained to many investors and clients of Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables Wood Mackenzie China’s overcapacity is not so simple and Chinese government will not let their manufacturing industry down even thought some smaller players have to be sacrificed for the sake of the industry and for taking it to the new level of development technologically, integrationally and by enhancing and improving operations domestically and worldwide to expand Chinese manufacturing presence overseas. Chinese solar companies are poised to dominate U.S. domestic solar panel production, a scenario that exposes a critical flaw in the Biden-Harris Administration’s clean energy agenda. China's breakneck build-out of solar power, fuelled by rock-bottom equipment prices and policy support, is slowing as grid bottlenecks pile up, market reforms increase uncertainty for generators, and the best rooftop space runs short. Last year, China expanded its solar fleet by 55%. The momentum continued through the first two months of 2024, but in March new solar build fell 32% year-on-year to the lowest level in 16 months, official data and Reuters calculations show.

SATURATION A symptom of solar saturation is now appearing in the manufacturing supply chain. In this environment, with panel factory capacity utilisation reportedly falling in China, and panel stockpiles reported to be growing in Europe, the Australian government is announcing incentives for Australian manufacturing of solar panels. It’s one thing to feel national pride for Australian scientists’ role in the early development of photovoltaic technology, but this is a very curious policy indeed. #solar #PV #panel #manufacturing #capacity #utilisation #China #Europe #Australia

It’s great to see the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) investing more money into helping #solar manufacturing. $71 million will help a lot of companies build the new domestic #supplychain, including, according to an article by PV Tech, some ingot and wafer production facilities. The earmarked money can also be used to purchase the most up-to-date module production equipment, which could allow U.S. manufacturers to leapfrog their Chinese competition. Success is not guaranteed, but having the government make this investment indicates to me that the current administration is serious about retaking #renewableenergy leadership for the U.S. When you combine this money 💸with the incentives and tariffs on Chinese modules, the U.S. solar manufacturing sector is bound to take off.
