🐾 The Importance of Loving Animals and a job Selection Process 🐾 Finding the perfect candidate for a job goes beyond technical skills. The connection with animals can reveal a lot about an individual and their values. A few weeks ago I entered a selection process for internal promotion in my company. The first contact after having developed a coordination and team management exercise, from HR they contacted me asking me 3 questions and one of them was "do you like animals?" I was thinking about it trying to understand the question, believing that there was a methodology to filter candidates, reaching a few conclusions: 1️⃣ Empathy: Those who love animals tend to be more empathetic, which translates into a greater ability to understand the needs of others, work in teams, and resolve conflicts positively. 2️⃣ Responsibility: Taking care of a pet requires commitment and responsibility. Employers value this quality, as it demonstrates the ability to fulfill assigned tasks and maintain long-term commitment. 3️⃣ Sensitivity: Those who enjoy the company of animals are often more sensitive and aware of their surroundings, which can translate into greater attention to detail and an ability to perceive subtle cues in the workplace environment. I have recently began working with a new client and for whatever reason there always seems to be teething problems whenever you start a journey with a new company. This story is no exception. I have received 8 roles across 3 separate sites in 2 separate locations and all roles have been filled with ‘strong, reliable operatives’. I experienced the ‘usual’ you get in many jobs temp or perm, operations booked in even though those questions were asked in the early stages of on-boarding, naturally the operative did not want to lose the position so failed to inform me of this. Another operative was late due to a horse escaping from his barn, becoming tangled up in barb wire, resulting in the fire brigade needing to be called, so was late to site, without a call to myself or the foreman. (The horse was actually a trye story, believe it or not) Another operative became ill after one week and another had to leave site due to family emergency. This spanned over 4 weeks so not as horrific as it sounds. Unfortunately, we become quite cynical with the number of stories you do hear , especially on a Monday morning. Naturally, I felt quite responsible, feeling like I had let my client down, with my attempts to explain, without sounding like the standard recruiter “this has never happened before , so and so is normally a good guy and there has never been any issues before” ,this is the part where I think your client could lose trust, as you could stone cold lie and the client will see through you and potentially question your integrity. I simply detailed in how we vet our candidates and apologised profusely for the inconvenience, to which the owner and director of the business said… “ these things happen, you have stayed connected with each issue or problem and let me tell you, if you think it makes a difference whether they are from an agency or I have directly employed them, it doesn’t. Don’t think for one second that my own lads on site don’t come to me with any issues or do not show in on a Monday or a Friday, as they do, I have heard many stories of why people hesitate from using an agency and for me this is not a deal breaker. I need the operatives to be good at the job and competent in their role to which they have been, you cannot control an individual, there is only so much control you have so for me, don’t stress. What would be an issue is if you were not contactable, even on your day off or aided with the refill’s and are always transparent”. Over the years I have had many understanding clients but to hear this yesterday was quite refreshing and not for a reason where it took some blame away from myself as I will always be my own biggest critic. It was the fact that my client was correct in that Implying, that in any profession or any industry, these things happen, people will be people and some things are taken out of our control. #venturecontracts #constructionrecruitment #happyfriday #honestyisthebestpolicy
