Today I thrust some straight-out-of-school-I-don’t-know-what-I-want-to-do interns with pushy helicopter moms onto one of my friends who is still recovering from her last batch of summer interns. Summer internships are great ways for young students to get used to a work culture. They are also used to pad resumes for college, masters and even high school students with no marketable skills as such are looking for summer internships. Now unless you go to a top university or are working on some serious practical skills, it isn’t always easy to get an internship in the long summer break between academic terms. And often we find that parents/ relatives / distant acquaintances are leveraged to spring an internship for the youngster. Often, the employer doesn’t know how to manage the summer intern. They’re young, with not too many practical skills, are temporary as they’re around only for the summer and are pretty raw. First and foremost, interns should be paid. You want free labor, take a pay cut. Hosting interns is an exchange of energy, knowledge, and work. Everybody should be properly compensated for that exchange. At Studio J Lorne, we know the importance of balancing unique ability and youthful energy with seasoned experience. Since J is getting a lil old (so he says), quirky perspectives, and crazy capabilities brought excitement to our work. Joseph, Hannah, Laia, and Alison have all contributed their unique styles and talents, elevating our projects and teaching us a thing or two in the process. It’s a two-way street. While we taught our interns the ins and outs of being creatives and business professionals, we also learned from their new approaches and ideas. It’s a reminder that no matter how much experience you have, there's always something new to discover or try out. Never be too proud or closed off to building new skills or trying different approaches.
