There's a lot about "exits" that noone ever talks about. Not nearly enough is shared about what it actually takes for a founder to get through the grueling gauntlet of an M&A process, but that post will have to wait for another day. This is the seventh client I’ve been with through their exit process, and  I don’t think I’ve ever seen an advisor or investor share about what that's like. (But I sure would love to hear their stories!!)   For me, it's not UNLIKE watching my child leave for college. It’s a success by every measure… but it's also a departure. While the journey is theirs, the parts we've shared, run deep – tough decisions, moments of doubt, bursts of triumph. And it's not just about the metrics.  While I don't have a financial investment, I would be lying if I said I didn't feel "invested" in what they built, and who they became in the process. I've seen them grow, evolve, and now they're ready to move on to what’s next. Much like with college send-offs, I wouldn’t stop this transition even if you could… but there's absolutely a sense of loss. I will miss them. I will miss their company (in both senses of the word). For a while, I will still have that swimlane in my head for them and all their things, even though it’s empty. YES, we will still be connected in plenty of meaningful ways, but it won’t be the same. And that’s ok. Impermanence is one of the few constants in life and business. All the love to Jess Gartner, Jason Becker and everyone at Allovue. My latest piece for ET Magazine harkens back to an earlier and timeless part of my life: During my 40-plus years of integrating technology into business and education, the biggest obstacles were not faulty products or excessive costs, but the objections of people. Those same people were also the heroes of education technology because some had the vision to see the bigger picture and the potential implications of new tools before anyone else. Early in my career, I found those objections particularly grating because they were what separated me and my technology from the world of successful, completed projects. It took moving to an elite boarding school as IT director to reframe and refocus what I now consider truly important when we introduce technology to people: setting up the balance between data and dignity, the idea that we must consider people and their agency when responsibly implementing and using technology.
