‘Gay job and a day job’: For Pride month, Endpoints News is highlighting LGBTQ+ leaders in the drug development industry for the third year in a row. These 14 individuals are guiding LGBTQ+ employee resource groups; ensuring clinical trials are diverse and representative; launching startups to develop new treatments that their own partners might one day need; paying homage to the patient advocates of the HIV/AIDS epidemic; and so much more outside of biotech (including fun side gigs like running a winery, pub or art gallery, to name a few). We originally planned to highlight 15 individuals this year, but there’s a reason it ended up being 14. New Resource Alert! 🔔 From the NHPCO Diversity Advisory Council (DAC) - Culturally Sensitive Communications to Enhance Care Delivery: A Resource Guide for Healthcare Professionals This guide offers linguistic considerations to support diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in health, hospice, and palliative care. It contains information from a multitude of NHPCO resources, such as the Hospice Through The DEI Lens report, Inclusion and Access Toolkit, Black and African American Outreach Guide, Chinese American Resource Guide, Latino Outreach Guide, and LGBTQ+ Resource Guide, as well as information from additional external research sources. The goal of the guide is to provide information, guidance, and technical expertise to all providers, especially those serving diverse communities, that will advance health equity in end-of-life care. Hugely honored to receive the David Harvey Award and deliver the Peter King Lecture at the GLADD Annual General Meeting in London. GLADD is the UK's only organization that unites and represents LGBTQ+ doctors, dentists, medical and dental students from all over the country with its roots going back to 1975. Everyone deserves access to high-quality, evidence-based health care because we know that patients have the best chance to thrive when they are supported and can obtain the health care they need - free from discrimination, bias, or stigma. While we have made progress, I know there are concentrated efforts in the United States and in the U.K. – efforts that are rooted in stigma, not science – that seek to roll back our progress. As LGBTQ+ physicians, we must continue to use our voices to stand against these efforts. Each of us brings a unique perspective and experiences to the practice of medicine, and it is our diversity that is the greatest source of our strength as a profession. That’s why we must work together to fight aggressive discriminatory actions that seek to roll back patients’ protections and that criminalize the work we do to provide care with compassion and dignity. The American Medical Association is committed to this effort, and thanks to organizations like the AMA, GLADD, GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ+ Equality and so many others, we will deliver a healthier tomorrow for our global LGBTQ+ community.

With an average of 7% of U.S. adults identifying as LGBTQ+, including up to 21% of gen Z, healthcare disparities and bias can have negative impacts on patient health and outcomes. 1 in 6 LGBTQ+ adults avoid health care due to previous discrimination. To address cancer risk in the LGBTQ+ community, the American Cancer Society has released a first-of-its-kind study showing that risk is higher in individuals who identify as LGBTQ+, largely related to modifiable risk factors associated with minority stress.
