Looking back at my childhood, there was a strong emphasis on going to college, while skilled trades were often undervalued. However, we are now realizing the importance of these trades. A first-year Walmart trucker can make up to $110,000. The top pay isn't out of the goodness of Walmart's corporate heart. Rather, the Fortune 1 believes truckers are key to its retail dominance. I wrote about Walmart's trucking strategy here... and some of the fleet's biggest changes. Walmart rolled out a nationwide CDL school in 2023, exclusively for its associates that get accepted into the program. For the first time, a Walmart truck driver won't need years of experience before getting into the driver's seat. Experts told me that this probably isn't so Walmart can drive down truck driver pay. The retail giant has hired nearly 6,000 new drivers in the last five years, and this internal recruitment/training strategy could be a way for Walmart to some future recruits. “It’s possible in this wave of hiring that [outside trucking hires] are diluting this Walmart culture,” Charles Fishman told me. “Truck drivers are famously independent.” Read more at FreightWaves: https://lnkd.in/duNip3wu

Is Walmart giving up on truck driver retention?? Despite six-figure pay and benefits, the giant retailer has started a 12-week training program for store associates who want to become truck drivers. This overview by Rachel Premack at FreightWaves includes opinions from a couple of Texas-based drivers. I’m seeing a lot of posts on here from CEO’s and others who make comments as if they are trying to understand the trucking industry. I wanted to take a moment to share a few points you might not be aware of ~ From a drivers perspective. 🚛 • A driver pays for all violations regardless. Some cost $1,000’s. • Showers are paid for by rewards points. If not $15-$20. • Parking most places is still free. • Where there is paid parking, I won’t pay over $15 and I always find parking every night. On and off ramps is not legal parking. •Weigh stations have the right to put a driver OOS and repair services will have to come to WS. Costs are 2x more. • Any commercial vehicle can be pulled over or inspected without a driver doing anything wrong. •If your company uses an ELD, it must be mounted, within reach of driver. Not on floor, 2x4s, passenger seat or in the bunk. •Legal paperwork binder must be in reach of driver, if he’s stopped it must be easily accessible. •All vehicles must have a yearly inspection. •A paper log book MUST be in the truck at all times and only one. It’s a violation to have more than one paper log book in a commercial vehicle. Must also have guide for ELD operation. •A company has 10 days to get an ELD repaired if it stops working, drive time can’t be changed. •Truck must have triangles, a fire extinguisher and spare fuses and D.O.T has the right to ask. •Drivers must follow the 8,11,14 & 70 hour rules. A 34 hour reset is needed to reset a drivers hours. •Recommend all drivers have headset for phone. •No trash or suction cups on window or dash. •Drivers know inward facing cameras are on 24/7. And the final one….there isn’t a driver shortage, it’s a retention problem. If the office staff don’t have training to understand what a driver does, it will never work long term. Drivers are tired of arguing with those in safety, dispatch and in the office who tell them to do things that go against what is required to hold a CDL. So they leave, it’s just that simple. Drivers won’t be vocal, because they don’t want to be trashed on DAC reports over a childish conflict, they silently exit and move onto the next job. When companies send out surveys, most drivers won’t answer them if they can tell who it’s from, because they don’t want to get fired for speaking up. I’ve learned to use my voice, being fired just means the company isn’t willing to listen. There’s plenty of other jobs out there, if a company doesn’t respect what I do. I hope that helps!
