Did you see my latest post about time management lessons from four elite Team USA Olympians? Big names like Simone Biles and Katie Ledecky dominated headlines from this year’s games. Those two athletes in particular have a lot in common, including the fact that they’re able to make their sport a full-time job. Most of their fellow athletes don’t have the luxury of being completely focused on training. Many of the people who competed in Paris this year are professionals with careers that have nothing to do with athletics. The recent blog highlights some of the most impressive athletes from Team USA, who work 9-to-6 jobs on top of intense training commitments. They’re all passionate about their sports, but they all love their work too. And none of them could have earned their spot in Paris without really disciplined time management skills! The sports coach mentality and how it can help within the workplace: Identifying the right team gets the trophies 🏆 One missing piece can cost the whole team hence selection requires hyper sensitivity , hyper merit. If we selected strictly based on merit over personal favour, that’s the key.

The notion of pre-season training is well embedded in competitive sports - it allows athletes to gradually get their bodies accustomed to the physical workload their sport demands of them. But what about pre-season training for the mind? Veteran high performance manager and coach John Haggart knows all about this, and it's an absolute thrill to be working with him and a group of Year 13 rugby players at St Andrew's College, New Zealand in a specially designed four week programme to help them build mental and emotional fitness as they prepare themselves for selection in their final year of high school rugby. Our first session yesterday focussed on legacy and reputation, with a bit of a twist. After a warm up using The Emotional Culture Deck, this lunchtime 'workout' asked players to think about the reputation they wanted the First XV to have... but instead of being known for achievements or athletic prowess, I asked them what emotions they wanted people in the future to feel - and not feel - when they remembered this year's team. It was a big ask. They had to propel themselves into a future where they were no longer at school but looking back on a team (which doesn't exist yet but which they're hoping to be part of!), and then imagine what they wanted OTHER PEOPLE to be saying about the team - all in the context of a human experience rather than the scoreboard. Reputations are built through consistent, repeated actions. And if you want to be known for something in the future, the best time to start repeating those actions is always now. The parting wero (challenge) for these players was to come up with a single, small action they could easily repeat during the week which would give others the experience they want to be known for in the future. What lies behind Olympic Medal success? It is inspiring to watch the amazing athletes competing in the Olympics. And behind every one of them is an team working together to help them achieve their goal. And you may be thinking, where would you even start? There are so many variables to medal success, especially with teams, so as a psychologist supporting a national team, I go to evidence-based research that shows what successful teams have and do to be successful. #1 Last year, we began that foundational work with setting out our Purpose and Values. This is the bedrock of everthing we do. It sets that standards and the boundaries of our team culture. And living and acting within these Values keeps us anchored to having a 'culture of excellence.' #2 Following on from this, we are now embedding an autonomy-supported environment. This means helping the organisation, coaches, support staff and athletes form a working culture of collaboration. Making people feel that they have agency - control and choice in what they are doing. We clarify roles and responsibilities, so that there is rationale and clarity with decision-making and implementation. We create effective processes for feedback with cooperation and collaboration at its core so that it is not dominated or controlled by one party. We provide initiatives for athletes to act independently, knowing that there is support available when needed. And behind this is a healthy relationship where feelings and perspectives are respected - even if there is disagreement. #3 Expert skill development has a focus to helping athletes (and staff) build their belief that they have the capacities to perform at their best at the Paralympics. This includes individual work with the athletes, and also helping the coaches and support staff to draw out and identify these personal capcities in their feedback, which enables beliefs to grow. Creating psychologically informed environments like this means everyone can understand how their feedback matters and how to do this most effectively. With a stronger belief in their abilities it sets the team up to work on the next phase of our team development. #4 Deliberately setting training environments with demand and challenge. After all, the Paralympics is going to have demands and challenges, so we want to train and practice being able to be in these environments. Success can be more effectively attained because the athletes have a sense of control, they trust their coaches and know support is there, and also they will have a stronger belief in their abilities which means that they can thrive in their competition environment. We believe that working on these key components, we will achieve high performance standards, enabling medal success. It's Talent Development Tuesday! Fresh from a trip to the USA Swimming Olympic Trials in Indianapolis, we’re inspired at the amazing accomplishments we witnessed, and we’re not just talking about the winners. The trials were a masterclass in resilience, focus, and the power of a positive mindset. Watching athletes give their all, we are reminded that the journey often matters more than the destination. More than 1,000 swimmers age 13 to 46 were competed for 52 spots on the U.S. Olympic Swim Team – just 26 men and 26 women – in events where .01 of a second could separate the best from the rest. Olympic hopefuls train for years, facing countless challenges and setbacks. Yet, what sets these athletes apart is their mindset. They embrace the process, knowing that every practice, every stroke, and every moment of perseverance contributes to their growth. In the world of talent development, this perspective is invaluable. Encouraging teams to focus on the journey rather than just the outcome fosters a culture of continuous improvement and resilience. Celebrating small wins, learning from setbacks, and maintaining a growth mindset can lead to long-term success and fulfillment. So, as we cheer for our athletes, let’s also reflect on our own journeys.
