The Institute of Medicine, in its 2001 report, The 1st Annual Crossing the Quality Chasm Summit: A Focus on Communities, described 6 aims for quality improvement, including care that is equitable.7 Communities and health systems can commit to the highest standard of care for all patients, ensuring that minority-serving hospitals are included in quality-improvement initiatives such as state perinatal quality collaboratives. Requiring all hospitals in a state to participate in these initiatives is a strategy for equitable diffusion. Patient and family engagement in quality improvement can help strengthen implementation with community voices and lived experience. We owe the infants of this country consistent high-quality care, no matter their skin color, and this article documents that there is work to be done.

Weight stigma we know from robust data causes profound harm to people living in larger bodies, and there’s no way to say to a family or a kid, “I’m recommending a form of intensive behavior and lifestyle therapy based on your child’s BMI…” without adding to weight stigma and causing harm….. Pediatrics has been at the forefront of preventive medical practices such as immunizations, screenings, care coordination with specialists and meeting defined health goals. Movement toward value-based care in pediatrics will likely continue to be a slow process. If we don't allow our patients to take risks and explore, and if we protect and guard them from everything, they won't reach their full potential. Allowing for safe risk provides the patient with respect, autonomy, and room to grow and make mistakes.
