Few days’ back Lara came to me and said, “Mama, I think you are getting frequently irritated these days.” I was shocked. I immediately apologised. I was upset at my behaviour. But as I reflected I was also happy that my daughter felt safe enough to come and share this with me. She was not afraid of being rebuked or ignored. Creating such psychological safe spaces for children is crucial. We expect this from teachers at school. But what if teachers have never experienced a safe space for providing honest feedback, asking critical questions or just sharing their challenges? District and block officials need to be trained to create this space for teachers. Once teachers feel supported and safe this will be reflected in their classroom practice. Once children feel safe in the classroom they will start engaging and ask questions without fear or hesitation. #safespaces #psychologicalsafety #learningoutcomes

To those of you kind people who engage with me and my posts, thank you for your patience these last few weeks. But, I have found the events of the last several months and these past few weeks paralyzing and devastating to watch. Watching campuses erupt with violence and segregation, 60 years after the Civil Rights Act became law, and the challenges for diversity, equity, and inclusion - I am struggling. Psychological safety on campus for students and professors is an ability to function without interpersonal fear. The same is true in all workplaces - fear inhibits learning, creativity, innovation, and speaking up. I am sharing Timothy R. Clark’s four elements of psychological safety. Remembering empathy, humanity, and diverse perspectives without cruelty, shame, or harm feels more important than ever. #psychologicalsafety #inclusion #diversity #safety #perspective #ideas #psychology #infographic #visualization #civilrights
