“Nothing about you, without you.” - the driving force behind WHY we moved to #Zambia 10 days ago. In other words, inclusive and authentic #meaningfulengagement. I’ve read A LOT of reports. I’ve conducted a significant number of Community Baseline and Needs Assessments, facilitated group discussions and gathered a shocking amount of research and #data. It’s great for context. It informs you. AND it’s insufficient, adversely influencing what we know as truth. ➡ It makes the most pressing social concerns about quantitative data, missing information about the realities on the ground. ➡ It impersonalizes the human being, becoming a statistic and consequently insecure about their capacity to own and steer their own future. ➡ And it’s historically had the industry engage with communities in a way that is paternalistic - ‘we own the truth, we know what you need, we know what's right/wrong according to "standard".' And often treated as separate from the productivity component of #mining or as #charity. Sadly, #communityengagement often becomes tokenistic to check a box- if a community cannot define and clearly state how input can impact a decision that is TOKENISTIC - that is sharing information not engagement. A survey is not engagement. A meeting doesn’t mean engagement. Even previously implemented initiatives with profound systemic impact DOESN’T MEAN ENGAGEMENT. Together with Jubilee Metals Group PLC we are redefining meaningful engagement. Many of you asked, and here's my first 10 days in Zambia: ➡ GETTING OUT IN THE FIELD on a continuous basis, from the top-down. Respecting, valuing and taking the time to understand local traditions, customs and knowledge. ➡ #STAKEHOLDER MAPPING to understand their interests, concerns, and power dynamics to tailor engagement strategies accordingly. ➡ EARLY ENGAGEMENT from the most preliminary stages of project planning to integrate community stakeholder feedback into #projectdesign and establish shared alignment on what needs to happen and who's doing what. ➡ VISIONING SESSIONS AND #ACTIONPLANS with all community stakeholders to co-create a shared future, including communities in the decisions that affect their lives and empowers them to become active participants in all programming to lead the ongoing #development. We are just starting to build the foundation of a much broader approach. Building capabilities and expertise to target fit-for-purpose engagement with communities is a challenge for the industry, but it must be a pillar of good corporate strategy. As we strive towards responsible #resourcedevelopment and #sharedvalue with host communities and countries, the QUESTION REMAINS: “How can we ensure that #communityengagement processes prioritize the voices and priorities of ALL community stakeholders and members, fostering equitable and sustainable outcomes for present and future generations?" In a previous post, there was such a fruitful conversation that was generated regarding sustainable development in and around our communities. Tagging a few of you here that also challenge conventional CSR models and that prioritize the voices and priorities of all community stakeholders and members. You nailed it - we need to stop going in with the perceived answer already and stop thinking that we know what’s best based on project timelines and objectives. Shareholders need to understand the value of full participation, not engagement and allow for the non-linear path that process will take to ensure full buy-in, creative solution building, and understanding directly from the community what will have the biggest impacts. Teams need to be built with local community members who understand the culture and context in a way expats never will and we need to LISTEN, not dictate direction or solutions to suit our own objectives. As social risk climbs up the ERM ladder at companies we are seeing companies scrambling to try and fit proper community involvement into their projects instead of starting with community and building the project from that point. It’s a system of failed aid turned into failed private engagement as we tried to mirror what was already broken. And it is great to see trailblazers doing things differently and trying new methods. I’m here for all of that 🙌🏽

The only way to secure and uplift community rights is to agitate for, and implement the U.S. system of private mineral rights to those that occupy and add labour to the land. The current concession system is likely to lead to the ongoing undermining of community rights.

Love this. The quant might help you identify problems at scale but it won't help understand how people are impacted or help prioritize or create solutions. There is no substitute for human connection. You have to get out and engage in the field! 👏

The annual report and data are made by the people for the people. Which means they need to own their projects. Give them the tools and they can teach their people and it lives in perpetuity. Thanks Brooke Bibeault for a very well written article. It points to what can be done as opposed to what should be. Appreciate some of the further comments as well
