You can't draw the bullseye after you've shot the arrow. A well-led recruitment process starts well before candidates are reached out to and a job posting is made. I see a lot of business owners who are frustrated when looking to attract high-performing leaders since the decision makers are either not specific or not reasonable in their expectations. You need to "build the target" of the ideal leader for your role. Focus on both the outputs that need to be accomplished AND your assumption on what experience will be of most value in completing those outcomes. Make sure to interview the Sales Leader who's interviewing you. The right Sales Leader can fast-track your career quicker than anything else. So, pick a role with a great sales leader. People can be blinded by other things: -remote working -higher base salary/ote -the chance to get to the next step in 6 months So, if you’re interviewing then make sure you understand what they can do for you. A good place to start is finding out: -who have they developed here before? -why do they like working at the company/in their role? -what do they think will make someone successful in the role? A few months ago, a #recruiter reached out to me. She was looking for someone with #marketing and #logistics experience for a company based in Long Island. We connected over the j/d (#branding, #budgeting, logistics understanding, strategic planning), and everything was great. My initial thought was that this company wanted someone to help them navigate the logistics industry, for the person I would be reporting to was not a logistics industry person. A few minutes into my interview, it became clear the hiring manager was looking for someone to 'campaign', to get the company out there. I stopped him mid-sentence and said, "Sorry, but this is not me." Taken back by my honesty, he tells me that when growing out of the team, he would like to explore my interest in being a product manager for them. A few emails and voicemails later, nothing. I have to remain persistent. I can grow the brand. I have fostered relationships, used simple tasks to get branding, and eased into social media while still using traditional marketing means. The old ways of doing things still work; companies need to understand this and not focus on one way because competitors are.
