When I first met with the John Lewis team two years ago, they were looking for a way to understand developer experience and how to improve as an engineering organization. Now, DX is used by every engineer, team, and leader; and Michelle Fitzgerald, Rob Hornby, and Howard Newell have spearheaded incredible improvements to issues like build times, requirements quality, deep work, and the engineering onboarding process. SiriusXM's Head of Platform Engineering Jared Wolinsky recently joined my podcast to share their incredible journey of transforming their streaming apps and developer platform. In late 2022, Jared and his team undertook the massive task of overhauling SiriusXM's entire digital infrastructure. They rebuilt everything from scratch—cloud accounts, backend services, and client applications. This ambitious move was driven by the need to compete aggressively in the digital streaming space. Post-launch, the team took a step back to reimagine the developer experience. They crafted a detailed user guide envisioning the ideal developer journey, from onboarding to deployment. They also introduced streamlined processes and paved paths to make everything more efficient. SiriusXM's journey highlights the power of prioritizing the developer experience and aligning projects with broader business goals.
