On International Women’s Day, the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) celebrates the indispensable contributions of women in the hospitality industry, emphasizing the crucial role of female leadership and involvement. The association urges stakeholders from both public and private sectors in the Caribbean hospitality industry to unite in advancing gender inclusion and equality. In response to this year’s theme, “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress”, CHTA President Nicola Madden-Greig, who also serves as the Group Director of Marketing & Sales for The Courtleigh Hospitality Group in Jamaica, is reinforcing the association’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of female leaders. Initiatives such as the CHTA’s Young Leaders Forum are pivotal in offering young professionals from across the region opportunities for growth and development. “With 19 out of 23 participants being female, this program plays a crucial role in inspiring and empowering the next generation of women leaders,” Madden-Greig remarked. She further advocated expanding such initiatives throughout the Caribbean to cultivate a more equitable and diverse leadership landscape in the tourism and hospitality industry. “To truly accelerate progress, we must enhance support for the development of women, especially female entrepreneurs,” she added. Vanessa Ledesma, acting CEO and Director General of CHTA, shared her journey as a female leader in the hospitality industry and the influence of incredible female leaders: “I’m proud to witness the remarkable female representation in our industry and within CHTA. However, there’s still a long way to go as we encourage others to pursue their passions for Caribbean hospitality.” With a history of female leadership, having seen four out of the past five CHTA presidents being women, and many national hotel and tourism associations led by women, CHTA, now in its 62nd year, highlights notable female leaders. Alongside Madden-Greig and Ledesma, this roster includes past presidents Patricia Affonso-Dass from Barbados, Karolin Troubetzkoy and Berthia Parle from St. Lucia, Karen Whitt, Regional Vice President from Turks and Caicos, Paola Rainieri, 4th Vice President from the Dominican Republic, and Lisa Hamilton, President of the Caribbean Society of Hotel Association Executives (CSHAE) from the U.S. Virgin Islands. Giampiero Schiavo, CEO of Castello SGR, recently spoke with Ludwig Menke, Director of Global Production RE Europe at GRI Club, in Milan during Italia GRI 2024 to discuss Italy’s evolving hospitality sector, including growing investor interest and a market that is ripe for repositioning assets amid value add opportunities. 🔹 Despite Italy's low market penetration of hospitality brands, there is considerable potential for growth, especially in luxury destinations such as Venice, Rome, Florence, Capri, Cortina, and Portofino, says Giampiero, before adding that there are also significant opportunities to develop new regions, citing the growth of Puglia as an example. 🙌 I am thrilled to share the significant achievements of Accor as we look towards a promising future in the travel & hospitality sector. With a strong performance in 2023, Accor broke records and showcased resilience. We are fueled by a positive global outlook, with projections for international travelers reaching 1.5 billion in 2024, a testament to the unwavering spirit of the travel industry. Here's a glimpse into our transformative year: 🔷 We've fostered an environment where uniqueness thrives, unleashing the potential of our teams with groundbreaking industry-first initiatives like the Reveal Talent program, whose first edition attracted more than 370 participants. 🔷 We have continued to make progress in terms of the representation of women in leadership positions (as for example with 36% women on the Group Executive Committee vs. 31% in 2022; 42% women on business line management committees). 🔷 We have continued to support Victims of Gender-based Violence providing, for example, emergency accommodation for almost 500 victims of domestic violence in 300 hotels in France, totaling 4,362 overnight stays, among more than 30 initiatives deployed locally by Accor teams. 🔷 We have pursued the deployment of our Human Rights Policy, striving to uphold the fundamental rights of our employees and advancing our commitments and actions to protect the rights of those working in our operations with specific attention to vulnerable individuals.
