Being a retail leader likely means that you'll see me carrying A ladder A first aid kit A customers bag An arm full of new product Big boxes Break table treats Paperwork Pliers … All while I give guidance over a walkie or Help a customer. While I deliver a one-on-one convo or Stop to talk to another retail store near me. I know how to fix all the registers, tablets and receipt printers and I try everything before I call IT. Retail leaders are adaptable, resourceful, and can do any job in front of them. Their skill set is extensive. Retail leaders have grit, tenacity, and do not shy away from hard work. It's well known that the best individual contributors do not always make the best managers/leaders. That said, I believe high performance in an individual contributor role is a baseline requirement for promotion to a management position. Individuals who have been successful before tend to find the path to being successful in a different role. They have a deep knowledge of the role and the respect of their peers as a result. Here are my big three requirements: 1. High performance in a (related) individual contributor role. 2. Kindness + empathy. 3. An interest in management/leadership. #3 is often overlooked -- if a higher performing IC isn't interested in becoming a manager, don't force them into it. Give them a fulfilling path in their existing role with higher comp, experience working unique/complex deals, etc. #management #leadership
