Happy birthday to Nettie Stevens, the scientist who discovered the role chromosomes play in sex determination! Stevens received her Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr in 1903, and would work as a researcher here until her death in 1912. Though her work is often overlooked in favor of research done by her male counterparts, Stevens's research on X and Y chromosomes would prove invaluable in ending the debate on whether sex was determined by genetic or environmental factors. 🔬 📷 Bryn Mawr Special Collections #BrynMawrCollege #NettieStevens #Biology #Genetics

2wI'm enjoying these posts on my feed, my mother graduated from Bryn Mawr in the 40's and taught nursing there for a number of years - she has great memories of the time, it shaped her life.
