There is a paradox in the NHS: staff numbers have grown by ~20% since 2019, yet acute activity has actually declined. This has led to an intense focus on workforce numbers and productivity. But look internationally, and you find a similar story across Europe, North America and Asia. This appears to be a new feature of global healthcare systems. So instead of focusing on raw numbers, we should instead concentrate on how we can support our workforce to deliver real and sustained improvements in activity, patient outcomes and engagement. This will require a change in how we think about data transparency, leadership and empowerment. Not straight forward, but definitely achievable.
