Why are the USA lagging behind on business and human rights negociations, when these are now on the table at EU and UN level? We want to use our film, to build alliances and to push this debate further in the USA, reason why we were in DC this week, invited by the amazing Double Exposure Investigative Film Festival and Symposium A project about business and human rights was actually introduced in the US Congress in 2019. Since then nothing is happening on that side of the Atlantic whereas the safety of those protecting our planet has not improved at all. 700+ environmental and human rights defenders are being killed every year. Often with the direct or indrect support of US or EU companies investing in these projects. 700+ is a serious problem, meaning 2 every single day, and we are not even talking about those injured or those getting death threats... What we need in this struggle is unity. LAUNCH: Today, the moderation guide “Trygge digitale rum” was launched by Oslo kommune in order to create safe and clear moderation of social media 🙌 👏 Nordic Safe Cities has played an active a part in developing the concept, which is ground-breaking by creating systematic support from the municipality to civil society, so that more organizations and voices can contribute on a larger and coordinated scale to create a safer digital city 👁 The initiative is part of our collaboration with the Norwegian Gjensidigestiftelsen and is the first pilot of a moderation program in a city under our Safe Digital City initiative©. Digital inclusivity and trusted digital space are included as key components of a “renewed social contract anchored in human rights” in “Our Common Agenda,” a report laying out the UN Secretary-General’s vision for the future of global cooperation, The report also proposes improving global digital cooperation by, among other things, connecting all people to the internet and recognizing digital commons as a global common good. Various political groups within the European Parliament advocate for different ideologies and priorities. These groups include Renew Europe, The Greens/EFA, S&D, and The Left. Let's take a closer look at each party's background, leadership, and key priorities. Renew Europe, established in 2019 and chaired by Chairperson Hayer Valerie, champions centrism and a pro-European stance. With 102 members, they prioritize democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, rejecting nationalist movements and advocating for a tolerant, inclusive Europe. The Greens/EFA, formed in 1999 and co-chaired by Philippe Lamberts and Terry Reintke, focuses on environmentalism and progressivism. With 72 members, they advocate for environmental protection, social justice, and self-determination, playing a crucial role in addressing climate change and human rights issues. S&D, tracing its roots back to 1953, embodies social democracy and progressivism under the leadership of Iratxe García Pérez. With 141 MEPs, they prioritize solidarity and advocate for a more social, united, and feminist Europe, aiming to address global challenges through a united Europe while countering populist and nationalist forces. The Left, emerging in 1995 and co-chaired by Martin Schirdewan and Manon Aubry, stands for leftist principles such as workers' rights, environmental protection, and peace.
