How do you balance self-promotion and demonstrating expertise? It’s a real question. I’ve recently done it intuitively and I wonder if there’s a strategy, a tactic that works every time. Here’s the scoop: I was applying for the team to speak at an industry event. There was an internal question about if it was too self-promotional but I felt like it struck the perfect balance of establishing expertise and showing what we’d talk about in a presentation. So I submitted the pitch. The event coordinator quickly wrote back and agreed that it was an interesting topic and they’d like us to speak! 🥳 Cool! The balance was achieved. I think it worked because I framed the pitch like this: ▸ what’s the problem ▸ who does it affect ▸ how we solve the problem ▸ why we’re the ones to talk about it ▸ what attendees can do next to solve the problem All this in a quick email. Yes, two parts were about us and our solution, but without those, we don’t establish credibility. We had to show why WE should talk about this and not someone else. What do you think? Would you have framed the pitch the same way? Two lessons here: ☝️ Use this pitch framework. ✌️ Trust your marketers.
