SEA-LNG COO, Steve Esau shares his latest insights into shipping’s energy transition in a recent gCaptain article, confronting the realities of green fuels and their scarce availability. With International Maritime Organization regulations on GHG emissions in mind, the industry must look to alternative fuels to decarbonise and meet long-term targets, but in the mid-term shipowners and operators' choices are limited due to the low-availability of renewable synthetic e-fuels and the heightened cost of these scarce resources. LNG reduces emissions by up to 23% in the two-stroke engines which dominate the installed base. Investing in these systems now accommodates the use of increasingly available bio-LNG produced from waste as a drop-in fuel. Implementing fuel-saving measures with LNG can reduce greenhouse gas emissions to meet IMO targets in the medium term. In the long term, as the hydrogen economy driven by renewable energy develops, renewable synthetic e-LNG can continue the journey to net zero. Japan shipping firm Kambara Kisen has ordered a bulk carrier that is designed to be powered by e-methanol. Slated to be delivered in 2027, the vessel is designed to use e-methanol produced primarily by synthesizing recovered CO2 and hydrogen produced using renewable energy sources, and bio-methanol derived from biogas. The use of methanol derived from non-fossil raw materials significantly reduces GHG emissions, compared to heavy oil-fueled and similar-size conventional vessels. The vessel will feature a dual-fuel combustion main engine that can run on methanol, or heavy oil as a backup fuel. MI Member Mitsui O.S.K. MetGreenPort plant in the Port of Huelva (southern Spain) will scale up to one million tonnes by 2029 with a total electrolysis capacity of 800MW, which would make it by far the biggest green methanol project in Europe. Electrochaea and Erik Thun Group have announced negotiations for the off-take of e-methane to be utilized as green marine fuel. This collaboration marks a pivotal move towards reducing carbon emissions in the maritime industry. Electrochaea, through its subsidiary BioCAT Roslev Aps in Denmark, is set to produce e-methane utilizing its patented bio-methanation technology. The process involves the use of renewable power from wind to produce green hydrogen, which is then combined with CO2 from biogas production to generate e-methane. This eco-friendly fuel will be integrated into the Danish gas grid, contributing to the decarbonization efforts across Europe. Shell pulls out of planned e-SAF project in Sweden After halting work on Rotterdam biofuel plant and booking a $1bn write down, Shell has also pulled out of e-SAF project planned with state-owned Swedish power utility company Vattenfall.
