“Even if we’re alone in nature, we’re not alone. Nature is a great listener and teacher. When I return from mountain climbing, I’m better for it. I show up better for the community.” - Senior Special Agent Andrew Prys, BLM Law Enforcement Wellness Coordinator Law enforcement officers, military Veterans, first responders, and others in high-stress occupations experience higher rates of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness as these jobs are more likely to cross paths with trauma. In the case of BLM law enforcement, an added stressor comes from the fact that officers often work alone in remote areas where backup is hours away. The ongoing investigation into the Maine shooting by a reservist has shed light on critical gaps in mental healthcare access for reservists. Colonel Mark Ochoa, command surgeon for the U.S. Army Reserve Command, highlighted limitations in care compared to full-time soldiers. Key considerations: * Geographic limitations and lack of VA eligibility for reservists can restrict access to treatment. * Communication barriers prevent private providers from sharing information with the military command. * Stigma surrounding mental health treatment may deter reservists from seeking help. Recommendations: * Expand mental health services for reservists to ensure accessibility. * Address privacy concerns to facilitate open communication with healthcare providers. * Foster a culture of support within the military to normalize mental health treatment. By prioritizing comprehensive mental healthcare for ALL service members, including reservists, we can prevent similar tragedies and ensure their well-being.

Second Chances for Veterans: One-third of military veterans report having an arrest history, compared to just one-fifth of non-veterans. To understand this disparity, the Veterans Justice Commission, founded by the Council on Criminal Justice, is investigating the unique risk factors that drive veterans’ justice-system involvement and offering evidence-based policy solutions to address them. Military service can lead to or exacerbate mental health issues, substance abuse disorders, traumatic brain injuries and/or homelessness, raising veterans’ risk of criminal justice system involvement. Notably, veterans with PTSD are 61 percent more likely to become justice involved, and veterans with a traumatic brain injury are 59 percent more likely. It is important for employers to be aware of these unique risk factors, and the intersectional challenges justice-impacted veterans face, so that they can better equip themselves with the tools and resources to help those who served their country transition successfully into the workplace. 'Line of duty' are actions and activities that are required or expected of members who serve in particular professions such as law enforcement, military, and public service. When a member dies in the line of duty, we all understand that they lost their life while performing those duties. Rightfully so, those incredible people are honored and remembered for their courage, sacrifice, and service to their communities and countries. They are our heroes who gave their lives to protect, serve, and uphold laws and freedoms. We engrave their names on memorials, tell stories of their lives in ceremonies, and their families are given support by the organizations they served. Members who die BECAUSE of the line of duty are also victims of their profession, albeit in a different way. There are physical and mental injuries, illnesses, and diseases that are either caused by or related to their profession. Consider soldiers and firefighters who have been lost to cancer due to exposure from hazardous materials. Due to occupational stress and trauma, first responders and military members die from suicide. Those who die BECAUSE of the line of duty are often overlooked or forgotten as their deaths are not as public, nor are they revered as equally tragic. Regardless of why or how, those members are also deserving of respect and recognition as their deaths are often the price paid for dedication to their profession. They are also heroes, but their battles are often fought in solitude. Those members need to be honoured, sharing their stories and having their names engraved to be forever remembered. We mustn't ignore or forget that their colleagues, families, and friends also need and deserve support from the communities and organizations that they once served. I see you. Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen has signed legislation expanding alternatives to prosecution and incarceration for military veterans, making his state the first to adopt an approach based on a policy framework from CCJ’s Veterans Justice Commission. https://lnkd.in/gHNMGmnk Under the new law, judges may divert justice-involved veterans into a structured program of supervision paired with treatment for PTSD, traumatic brain injury, and other service-related conditions that often drive criminal behavior. The approach complements existing Veterans Treatment Courts and will help more veterans manage the invisible wounds of war many bring home. Nationally, 14% of counties operate such courts, and eligibility requirements exclude many veterans. Commission Chair Chuck Hagel, a Vietnam veteran and former U.S. Defense Secretary, said, “People who have served in our armed forces have sacrificed to protect all of us. This law recognizes that sacrifice by ensuring that our veterans receive interventions that can help them.” In addition to Hagel, the Commission includes former U.S. Defense Secretary and White House Chief of Staff Leon Panetta and 13 other top military and criminal justice leaders.
