One of my strategic thought partners works at a pet food company. Why? Pet food often follows human food trends. We share supply chains. And most importantly, agricultural practices spread across the globe from farmer to farmer. While the skeptics sometimes flinch at the "big names" getting into #regenerativeag, these types of collaborations move the industry forward and done right, support farmer livelihood. https://lnkd.in/gMHV8fKF

Last month during the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA)'s Pet Food Conference, Frank Mitloehner of the UC Davis CLEAR Center took the stage to unearth the industry's true environmental impact. As consumers' concerns for #sustainability rise, many in the #petfoodindustry have turned toward eco-friendly packaging, alternative proteins and sustainable operations to reduce their impact on the environment. Though these efforts are great, Mitloehner stressed the need for the industry to support more interventions at the agricultural level. Big news for sustainable pet owners! 🌱 Hungarian insect producer Agroloop is taking a giant leap towards eco-friendly pet food. Their new €20 million facility, set to open near Budapest Airport in autumn 2024, will harness the power of black soldier fly larvae to create a protein-rich alternative to traditional animal feed. Why this matters: - Water Wise 💧 Uses 40x less water than traditional livestock farming. - Land Steward 🌍 Requires 30x less land per unit weight of protein. - Energy Efficient ⚡ Produces feed with reduced energy consumption. - Climate Champion 🌿 Generates 40x fewer carbon emissions per unit weight. Plus, their circular economy model upcycles over 20,000 tonnes of food byproducts annually, transforming waste into a valuable nutrient source for insect production. Have you considered insect-based pet food for your furry friend? (this is not a paid endorsement - I just have a very strong interest in insect foodstuffs) #InsectProtein #EcoFriendlyPets #Sustainability https://lnkd.in/eCk2JrCP

The U.K. poised to lead the alt protein market? Despite regulatory push-back in Italy and France, the U.K. government has approved cultivated chicken cells for sale in pet food. Meatly will be the first company to take this technology to market here. Interestingly, the article states "a study by the University of Winchester found that 50 per cent of surveyed pet owners would feed their pets cultivated meat and 32 per cent would eat it themselves." Would you feed this to your dog? Would you eat it yourself? My view is this sets a precedent for future approvals and shifts us closer to these technologies being accessible as a tool for more sustainable food systems. Next up, approval for human consumption?

BSF in the news: "Insect protein is a key solution to a sustainable pet food industry" "On June 12, the White House introduced a plan to meet its goal of reducing food loss and waste in the U.S. by 50% by 2030. The National Strategy for Reducing Food Loss and Waste and Recycling Organics, a collaborative effort between USDA, FDA and EPA, included multiple mentions of insects as part of the solution to this problem, noted Aaron Hobbs, executive director of the North American Coalition for Insect Agriculture (NACIA). “Just this week, the Biden Administration published its plan," said Hobbs. “Insects can -- and are -- playing a growing role in the prevention of food waste and food loss in multiple ways.” Full story: https://lnkd.in/d2UGaBh3 #insects #petfood #insectfarming #insectos #insectes #moscasoldadonegro #insecten #insectfarm #petfoodinnovation #petfoodindustry #blacksoldierfly #petfoodingredients #sustainability #alternativeproteins #pets

https://buff.ly/3LEBIJl This article on Fruitnet caught our eye recently, and it started a small debate about the pros and cons of certification for farmers. Yep, certification can provide farmers with access to premium markets, increased credibility, and consumer trust. It often leads to better farming practices and can result in higher yields and better quality produce. However, certification can be costly and time-consuming for farmers. The rigorous standards and continuous audits can be a burden, especially for small-scale farmers who may lack the resources to comply with all the requirements. Schemes like GLOBALG.A.P. c/o FoodPLUS GmbH can help fruit growers simplify the compliance process. What are your thoughts? #Farming #Agriculture #Certification #Sustainability #Farmers
Can certification truly shift from a burden to an asset?
