I recently heard about the amazing donation received by the Brookfield Zoo here in the Chicago area. First and foremost, congratulations to Kirsten L. Powers and everyone at this great cultural institution in our community, for what I’m sure will be a transformational gift. This gift got me thinking – what inspires these mega gifts which can, and do, transform nonprofits across the world and in our communities, every day - and what lessons can we take, as fundraisers, from this remarkable example. Here are three reasons that occur to me. 1) As fundraisers, we often struggle with ‘competing’ with our sister organizations for donor dollars and attention. These mega gifts remind us that there are people who care deeply about all sorts of missions. Our job is to find and cultivate these relationships. 2) This donor was noted as being a loyal supporter. This reinforces the importance of not taking the loyalty of our long time supporters for granted by re-earning it every day. 3) This donation was made anonymously. This reminds me of one of my favorite things about our field of work – every donor's motivation is different. We often assume it’s recognition that is most important to donors. Kudos to the team at the Brookfield Zoo for identifying and achieving this donor’s unique motivating objectives. What do you think - any observations you would add, fundraising pals...? https://lnkd.in/gxQ2qWMe

"When it comes to charitable giving, more is caught than taught." If you have put a high value on charitable giving, it's also likely important to you that the next generation of your family develops the same passion. If you are a parent or grandparent, we strongly encourage you to consider how you can get the next generation or two involved in your charitable giving. Let them see the impact it can make. Let them engage with those in need and develop a deeper sense of compassion. If you want generosity to be part of your legacy, remember it is more often caught than taught.
