We are pleased to announce the 5th nonprofit participating in the 2024 GIVE Advisory Project: Lori's Hands, Inc.! Lori's Hands, Inc. builds mutually beneficial partnerships between community members with chronic illness and college students, fostering empathy, connection, and resilience. Students provide practical assistance to support community members' independence at home, and community members share their health and life experiences to support students' learning. Nonprofit work is hard but it doesn't have to be impossible. And, crucially, our social mission makes the work imperative. For profits measure success most often with a bottom line which nonprofits do not have. However, thinking carefully about services that you are delivering and finding even simple metrics that allow you to calibrate change can create a picture of what is happening. For organizations without a data and/or a research component, approach local colleges and universities who may be able to connect you with a student or faculty member who can be helpful. At Every Child Succeeds, one of our most important learnings came from a student writing a research paper that helped us understand why moms were not making appointments for well baby visits. As I have said so often, responsibility goes two ways: the organization to identify performance metrics and the board to hold the organization accountable.
