Rant time: As someone who works in PR, I think there's an urgent need to remind our clients what proper media and journalism is really about. These so-called media companies and trade journals cropping up have very little legitimacy and are really taking the advertising budget away from the media titles actually upholding true standards of journalism. What is your checklist for ensuring a media advertising opportunity' is not just a scam? And where do we draw the ethical line in the sand about what counts as a 'media house'?

It seems these days that everyone has an opinion on most matters, and it’s difficult to avoid others’ opinions if you’re active on social media! What I find interesting is the effect of social media on these things. 30 years ago you thought very carefully about taking something to “the media”. A journalist would have their angle on it and you’d effectively lose control of the narrative once it was out of your hands. Now, of course, the lines of communication are a lot shorter and simpler. We’re all doing our own journalism, in a way! What’s interesting though, is that people put everything on their social media platforms and often still lose control of it once the keyboard warriors get stuck in. The question is: are all these opinions valid? Have we lost the art of debate and accepting the validity of other points of view? I'd welcome your thoughts on this, actually! The death of the online media industry, which has now reached its irreversible phase, is not a case of an industry transforming so much as it is a case of an industry disappearing. The journalism jobs currently being slashed at what seems like every single publication in America are not migrating into jobs at publications that utilize some new form of technology. They are just going away. “Creative destruction,” so beloved by economic theorists, can be scary but beneficial in the long term. This is not that. As drastic cost-cutting measures roil the news business, a cluster of media brands are reconsidering their reliance on subscription revenue. Though large publishers like The New York Times have successfully cashed in on subscriptions, the reader-revenue model is less successful for smaller brands, which often see ad rates plummet along with page views. TechCrunch, for instance, laid off and shuttered its paid-subscription product, TC+, the tech-news website confirmed Tuesday. Time and Quartz also removed their paywalls in the past two years, and Business Insider and Gannett have “loosened” theirs, Adweek reports. “Building around two businesses hasn’t allowed us to focus where we can win,” Techcrunch’s editor-in-chief, Connie Loizos, wrote in a memo to staff. A spate of urgent headlines proclaiming the decline, if not the death, of the news industry is prompting conversations on LinkedIn about the need for new revenue models in journalism. https://lnkd.in/gPqUSrAP
