Episode 61 of the international @MS-Perspektive #Podcast: How to recognize bladder disorders in MS with the help of a simple questionnaire This time I would like to introduce the „MS Bladder Check Tool“, which was developed by a team of neurologists, urologists and rehabilitation specialists. First author of the paper is Prof. Dr. Peter Flachenecker. It is designed to enable rapid management of #bladder dysfunction caused by multiple sclerosis. Bladder symptoms occur in a high percentage of #MS patients, although the figures vary in different scientific sources. For many MS patients, problems begin within the first five years. However, until now, the symptoms of around half of people suffering from bladder disorders have not been treated. This is why the international team of experts from nine different countries has developed a simple questionnaire that patients can fill out while waiting for their appointment with a #neurologist or MS nurse. The aim is to treat bladder disorders as quickly as possible, preferably when they occur, so that quality of life remains at a high level. Interview with Prof. Dr. Patrick Küry This time I talk to Prof. Dr. Patrick Küry from Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf about whether we can treat #Neurodegeneration in #MultipleSclerosis by modulating HERV-W? Multiple sclerosis is driven by two disease-causing aspects – acute inflammatory activity, which is now well treatable, and neurodegeneration, which continues to pose major challenges to researchers and physicians. Finding ways to effectively treat neurodegeneration could finally help people in the progressive course, whether #PPMS or #SPMS. And since neurodegeneration presumably starts in the prodromal phase, i.e., with the onset of pathogenic processes, all MS patients would benefit. But what is HERV-W and how can it be influenced to prevent neurodegeneration? That’s what I talk about in an interview with Prof. Küry. I find this research on HERV-W extremely exciting, especially since it seems so far that there are no or few side effects to be expected. And I would be so very happy if there are finally first breakthroughs in the treatment of neurodegeneration and thus the progressive processes of MS. So that people with PPMS and SPMS have more than symptomatic therapy options available. This is what happens when GOOD people accrue wealth from value added to others’ lives — they give it back to humanity. A lab near me — HHMI’s Janelia Lab — honestly changed my life. From what I understand, it’s a lab that’s privately funded from a large endowment. They use their funding to pursue the most exciting, interesting, and innovative neuroscience/CS research out there. They build new technologies that change science forever. And they also use their funding to support high schools, like that which I attended. They kept AOS free to attend, allowing me and 67 peers the space and freedom to conduct research as 16 year-old’s. That school pushed me hard. I turned in math quizzes with tears on them, and spent every lunch sorting flies by sex. But that school also made me a better thinker and human. Now, I know there can be “tricky” outcomes when not-so-great people accrue excess wealth… or when labs are privately funded with perverse incentives… and I know not everybody remains “good” as the money keeps rolling in. But we should take time out of our day to celebrate the good.
