Loads of people are back to work today. Those "It's a January job" meetings are suddenly here. -> You'll start to do performance reviews      and get/give 360 feedback. -> You'll contribute to 2024 strategy meetings       and hype up your team for the year ahead. -> You'll see the final end-of-year results...      and what that means for this years budgets. -> You'll set personal targets for Q1 and H1.      The growth and achievements you want to see. That list will either excite you; Thinking about what you will achieve this year. Or it will fill you with dread.  Because the holidays didn't just mean a rest with family and friends. It was an escape from: - your 50-hour working week - time spent in a job you don't enjoy - procrastinating about changing the status quo And now it's back to the grind. If the latter resonates. April 1st. New Month. New Day. New Quarter 🗓️ Here’s a list of things to check off before we roll into Q2! ✅ Make your “done” list from Q1- it’s easy to forget everything you’ve accomplished since the year started, take a moment to honor yourself and your progress thus far. ✅ Follow up on things you missed- emails, meetings, that coffee date that never happened. It’s not too late to follow up, close things out, or reschedule for a future date. ✅Shoot your shot for spring opportunities- if there’s an event you want to speak at, a brand you want to work with, or a new job you have your eye on, now is the time to after new things. Forget the rejections of Q1, it’s a new season! ✅ Organize your calendar and schedule a “wellness” day- there’s more to life than just work alone, make sure you schedule at least one day dedicated to self care. I'm not usually nervous about sharing stuff on here... 😅 But for some reason, I am about this... 🤔 Aucklanders... On Thursday 22 August, I'm hosting an intimate event limited to 10 people who are keen to get their spark back. It's for mid-career leaders or professionals who are: - Overwhelmed with too much going on... - Overlooked and struggling to engage people in their work... - Over it and wondering if they should quit or move on. Professional growth is not always in the paycheck, the title, or the accolades you receive, but in the depth of understanding of craft that time, wisdom, and experience provide. There’s a Zen Kōan that says: “Before enlightenment; chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment; chop wood, carry water.” 🪵🪓🪵 🪣🪣 Since my layoff, I’ve tried to embrace a “chop wood and carry water” mentality when it comes to my work. For me, this means taking satisfaction in doing work that I enjoy to earn a paycheck — even if it’s something I did earlier in my career. After being an executive, it can be humbling to go back to doing work that more junior members of your team used to do, but if you can set your ego aside, it can be tremendously satisfying to approach work with a beginner’s mind. Using your fundamental skills, with the wisdom gained from years of work experience, can only make your work product sharper. Unhappy in your current position? Been there… It can be miserable. And then okay. Then miserable again. What a cycle. How do you find clarity and jump? I figured out what is important to me -  Freedom (no micromanagement) Strong Mission (bettering the world) Wealth (good salary) Balance (I have 2 daughters, they need me) Interaction (I can’t be isolated) With these 5 important factors, what could I do? A lot. Its up to me to put in the work to figure out where. The what. The how. But, I know my why. We only have one life. Take control of it. Don’t be a passenger. Drive. Be happy. 

How to prepare for your first day at work? The big day is nearly here! Your first day at your new job is coming up, and you might be feeling a little anxious. Don't worry - with a few simple steps, you can ensure it's a smooth and successful start. First, do your research. Read up on the company's mission and values, and familiarise yourself with the team and their roles. 🤓 This will give you a better understanding of the culture and how you can contribute. Use your notice period before you start to meet up with either your boss and or visit their office. Whilst daunting it will make day one so much easier if you have already met those you will be working with either in the office or in a social environment beforehand. Have a conversation the week before with your new employers to understand the structure for week one, what you will be doing and with whom and anything you need to bring. It's much better if you have a plan mapped out for the week. Finally, make sure you have everything you need. Before embracing the work-life culture, we often harbor extravagant dreams and aspirations for our future. We envision a life where our passions and goals become our reality. So, I ask you: What kind of work are you currently engaged in? Is it a work you truly WANT or a work you simply NEED? The work you "Want" embodies your dreams, goals, and passions, providing a fulfilling livelihood while allowing you to pursue what you love. On the other hand, the work you "Need" may be a means to pay the bills, even if it feels draining. It offers invaluable lessons and insights along the way. Both paths, "Want" and "Need," hold significance and validity. If you have the opportunity to pursue your desires, I celebrate your journey.
