Learning is essential, just like food, and should be part of your daily routine.

If you have learned four different skills within the space of three months, you have shiny object syndrome. You'll burn out and you won't achieve anything. Quote me anywhere, any day. Listen there's a difference between learning bits of skills to form a whole and taking four different whole courses or learning within a tiny space. Imagine you're learning to bake a cake. Learning bits of skills to form a whole would be like learning how to mix ingredients, how to preheat the oven, and how to measure accurately. You're picking up individual skills, and eventually, you can put them together to bake a cake. On the other hand, taking four different whole courses or learning within a tiny space is more like enrolling in separate classes where each one teaches you everything about a specific type of dessert - cookies, cupcakes, brownies, and pies. And the latter leads to what is known as information overload. Not only is it disgusting, it's also a sign of mental laziness. It shows a lack of interest in thinking deeply. You’re not putting much curiosity into what you're doing. So before you jump into the next right course without finishing the one you have at hand, ask yourself these three questions; 1. How long do I intend to keep jumping from one course to another? 2. The people I look up to, how many of them succeeded by jumping from one skill to another? 3. What is my goal with this new learning? Training Tuesdays are a favourite in our team! We bring our team into the office for a lunch & learn session with our Tutor Paula and the senior team. 🍕 We buy lunch for our care team - pizza, sandwiches, scones & jam, soup - we vary it each week to keep it interesting, just like we do with the clients and their food. This gives a space to come together and chat which is important when you are out and about for work. 🧑🏼🎓Our team get paid time every week to study and improve their skills. They have a dedicated session where our tutor covers key topics over the year and they can ask questions and enhance their own skills set. 😤 The team can let off steam and talk about any struggles they have during this session. They have access to expert advise and we are able to resolves any queries before they get more serious. ⛔️ We use this session to reflect and learn from things we could have done better. If we have an incident of any kind, then this is the space the team talks it through and we share the learning. 🏆️Staff use this training to complete qualifications and learning outcomes. We recognise great achievements or when people have gone the extra mile.

Think of education like making a pizza:🍕 👉Curiosity as the dough: Just like dough is the base of a pizza, curiosity is the base of learning. When kids are curious, they want to explore and find out new things. 👉Empathy as the sauce: Sauce covers the dough, just like empathy helps us understand others' feelings. It's important for making friends and getting along with others. 👉Teamwork as the toppings: Toppings make pizza tasty, and teamwork makes learning fun. It's about working together, sharing ideas, and achieving goals as a team. 👉Learning as baking the pizza: Just like baking turns ingredients into a delicious pizza, learning turns knowledge into understanding. As kids learn, they become smarter and better at doing things. So, education is like making a yummy pizza, where curiosity, empathy, teamwork, and learning all come together to create something awesome! Enjoyyyyyyyy 🍕🍕

Breaking News!!! STOP wasting your time learning new things! Acquiring information and NOT applying it is a big waste of time! It's like going to a fine dining establishment and purchasing an exquisite, expensive meal, taking a picture of it and not taking one bite. Gaining knowledge is the first step to learning, but the secret sauce is putting that knowledge into practical application. Take charge of your learning by setting clear, specific goals and applying critical thinking skills to execute them. This step towards implemented wisdom will lead you to new strategies, fresh perspectives and unimaginable experiences. Education is about 10% of your overall body of work, but Experience is 70%. So, if you take the time to learn something new, please take the necessary steps to turn that knowledge into action!

Learn Something New It doesn’t have to be new to everybody. It just needs to be new to you. Don’t dumb down your enthusiasm based on other people already knowing what you just found out. Learning is not the unearthing of only the novel. Learning is the discovery of insights that bring a new perspective to you. I am the primary coffee maker in our house. Each evening I get the coffee maker ready. I scoop in the grounds. Fill the coffee carafe with water. I like a full coffee carafe. Therefore, I fill it just above the 12 cup mark. I pour the water in. Set the timer. When we awake…fresh coffee! I was a bit frustrated when grabbing the coffee carafe only to discover it was not completely full. It was closer to 11, then 12 cups. This made no sense to me. This went on for several mornings. I finally shared my bafflement with my wife. She kindly explained it to me. “When the water filters through the grounds all of it doesn’t make its way through. The grounds absorbed some of the water. If you want a fully full carafe you need to add a little water to the bottom of carafe prior to placing it on the coffeemaker.” I did not know this. I have been making coffee for many, many years. No one had shared this game changing insight with me. Then again, I never asked. I had learned something new. Made no difference to me that others were aware of this parlor trick. It was new to me! I had to share my new learning with someone. We had some friends over. I maneuvered the conversation to brewing coffee. I shared MY new learning. The wife responded, “I knew that.” Regardless that it was becoming evident that this was not a never before discovered idea, I was still thrilled. As mentioned previously, it was new to me. In small things. In everyday endeavors. In common activities. There is always something new to learn. What you learn may not be new to everyone. You may be a bit late to the knowledge party. Just don’t let that dampen your enthusiasm.

I recently came across a talk that changed my perspective about the discipline of learning a new skill. While the goal is to be competent in the skill, it can be easy to place all enjoyment on the result and not on the process. Approaching learning this way is counterproductive, as the desire to persist will die due to the lack of dopamine hits. Instead, the focus should be on how much progress you make each day, no matter the struggle. Approaching the process this way will change how the mind chases dopamine hits as it measures progress, even when facing setbacks. Hearing this depicts how influential our minds can be when changing our perspective.
