Every time we host one of our Summer Associate Hub Virtual Showcases, I think about how much I wish I had this as a 1L. The best way to learn about law firm practice and decide your path as a law student is by hearing directly from attorneys. Our live virtual programs are such an easy way to do that and the content is top-notch. Last night was the perfect example. We had three Mergers & Acquisitions partners speaking in detail about what M&A work means, the difference between private equity M&A and strategic M&A, why they chose to be M&A lawyers, and how a student can learn about it in law school. They also told us about the coolest deals they have worked on (Mike won that one), which were great examples for our audience of the different types of deals you can work on as an M&A lawyer. The session was recorded and now accessible for students to watch on our website and YouTube. This topic is especially important since the 1L curriculum is so litigation-heavy... but the majority of students going into BigLaw will end up doing corporate work. Paul Weiss is apparently conducting an experiment in London. The firm is attempting to use its considerable pocketbook to make a dent in the powerhold that Kirkland & Ellis and Latham & Watkins have on the private capital market by hiring away a chunk of the top expertise in the City. Only time will tell if the effort has been worthwhile and if the US powerhouse has been successful in driving a wedge into the seemingly bullet-proof hold the two firms have held on the market. #globalmarkets #globalbusiness #privatecredit #biglaw #marketshare

I recently saw a post on this website about new rankings from a national magazine for law firm "prestige" in Texas. I do not gainsay the prestige of the global firms listed. I started at a fancy firm like that myself; they're very fine law firms, they pay a lot of money, and they attract great talent. And for mergers and aquisitions work, they may well be the best choices in Texas for law students and junior lawyers. Let me make my alternative pitch, though - which I think I can say because I have no dog in the fight (I work at a deeply unranked boutique!). If you're a litigator that wants to be in Texas state courts and Texas federal courts, you should not go by national rankings. Go to the website of the courts you'd like to work in and search for which firms are handling the biggest cases or even the most cases. Who went to trial? Who is handling the appeals? Which Petitions for Review are being granted by the Texas Supreme Court? Who is arguing in the Fifth Circuit? I think you'll find that most of those are being handled by firms that are not based in New York or London.
