We were honored to host an Orrin G. Hatch Foundation symposium on Monday with keynote speaker Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) and a panel discussion with Judge Ryan Nelson (U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit), Hannah Smith (Associate Director of BYU Law’s International Center for Law and Religion Studies), and Christopher Bates (Deputy Solicitor General for the Utah Attorney General’s Office), with Hatch Foundation Executive Director Matt Sandgren as moderator. The symposium focused on preserving and protecting the independence of the U.S. Supreme Court, particularly the importance of insulating the judiciary from politics, including resisting politically-driven efforts to “pack the court” by increasing the number of judges while a party is in power.
