If you live in the Johnson County area, we would love for you to attend tonight's Indiana Food Vision- Johnson County Listening Session at 5:30 held at Purdue Extension Johnson County. I have had a lot of questions about the Indiana Food Vision the last few months and hope you have directed your questions and thoughts to the website and to the contact email. The website it fairly informative but please reach out if you need further context or would like to be involved. At tonight's event our discussion will center around these questions: *What is a food system and what is our role in it? *What is working/not working in our food system? *What assets do we have currently and can build on? *What would a perfect food system look like? Details of note: -We all eat- so we all have a place in this conversation. Even those who grow our food. -I think we can all agree that we want to see more 'Indiana Food' on 'Indiana Plates' and there are many ways and many paths to get to that goal. -A food system includes growing food, transporting food, processing food, packaging food, buying food, cooking/eating food, disposing of food, reusing of food, and so on. That is a big space, and it takes a lot of ideas and a lot of pathways to feed our communities. -Lastly, when creating a food system that is organized for a community and region- you need input from people who work in these areas to really move the needle: zoning, policy, public spaces, small business development, marketing, public education, planning, economic development, healthcare, emergency food assistance, healthy food education, food councils, community foundations, community governments, and so on. So, it is vital to have a cohesive discussion on topics that are actually relevant to us all- and how we eat, where we buy our food, and eating in general- that is a relative topic amongst us all. Huge win for healthy food! Our board member, Ribka Getachew, and the NYS Good Food Purchasing Program Coalition championed the Good Food NY Bill, the first of its kind statewide! This groundbreaking legislation empowers municipalities to prioritize healthy food that supports local economies, worker well-being, racial equity, and sustainability. Years of their hard work and advocacy have paid off as the New York State legislature overwhelmingly voted to pass this bill! The Good Food NY bill paves the way for public institutions to invest in food that nourishes our communities, environment, and food system. New York leads the nation with this precedent-setting policy! Victory for the Good Food NY Bill means we are closer to a more just food system. By prioritizing local economies and racial equity, this bill can create opportunities for Black agricultural and food actors to thrive and contribute to the health of our communities. Standing united against the pressing issue of food insecurity at the Junior League of San Diego's Annual Impact Forum. This year, our mission is clear: Educate, Inspire, Act. With one in four San Diegans facing the challenge of food insecurity, the need for collective action is urgent. The Impact Forum served as a platform for a robust panel discussion and Q&A, featuring insights from esteemed experts, including Hayley Bratt, Amy Ellis, Javier Guerrero, Dr. Julie A. Elginer, Patty O'Connor, Naomi Young, and Christina Pascucci. Their expertise and dedication inspire us to delve deeper into the issues surrounding food insecurity. Our goal is threefold: to educate the community on the realities of food insecurity, to inspire new ideas and approaches, and most importantly, to catalyze meaningful action. Past Impact Forum outcomes, like JLSD’s Diaper Bank and Period Pantry, demonstrate the power of collective efforts. This time of year, “food” and favorite recipes come up a lot in conversation. But what about Food Insecurity and Food Justice? How much do you know, and what can you do in your own community? During tomorrow’s webinar, "Food Justice: Awareness, Access & Action!,” Nzingha Campbell (Food Policy Fellow) and Jessica Fink (Food Policy Data Fellow) will discuss all aspects of Food Justice including how systemic racism and colonization impact how the food system works – or doesn’t work – for each member of our community. They’ll cover: ✔️ What is Food Justice ✔️ Food Policy and Planning Division ✔️ All things SNAP ✔️ Community resources in Baltimore  ✔️ Call to action Plus, they’ll share what’s working in Baltimore along with some really exciting initiatives happening locally and nationally to address food insecurity. And, there will be time for Q&A throughout. The two emerging leaders began serving with Baltimore City’s Dept. of Planning in 2022 through the Baltimore Corps Fellowship.
