Education is the most powerful tool to combat hate and prevent atrocities. As part of his #EducationtoEndHate initiative, State Superintendent Tony Thurmond delivered an inspiring closing keynote address at the summer professional development institute of the California Teachers Collaborative on Holocaust and Genocide Education. Superintendent Thurmond engaged nearly 150 educators from 51 districts who gathered to hear moving, firsthand accounts from survivors of the Rwandan genocide, Cambodian genocide, and the Holocaust. These dedicated teachers walked away with invaluable best practices, model curricula, and support for unit planning, all aimed at ensuring the powerful lessons of these past atrocities resonate with and educate the next generation of young leaders. Superintendent Thurmond also co-chairs the Governor’s Council on Holocaust and Genocide Education.

Folks…too many DEI initiatives suffer from a lack of Jewish representation. We make up less than 2% of the Canadian population but suffer a vastly disproportionate amount of hate crimes, which have risen 500% since October 7th! Adding Antisemitism training such as the one below from the FSWC to your Diversity & Inclusion initiatives is a concrete step you can take to help make your company more fair and inclusive for all. Leaders, HR professionals and…well…frankly everyone - please click or forward the below link and help your company stamp out hate in 2024. Just know that this type of training is equally important whether your company is centered in Abbotsford, Moosejaw or Whitehorse as if it’s headquartered in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal or NYC; not for nuthin, but making the world a little bit safer and more understanding for me and my kind would be the best kind of Channukah gift. Thank you for reading and considering. Now please take action.

To all my friends in Washington State - we need this now more than ever. The Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) and Holocaust Center for Humanity are co-sponsoring a bill to make Holocaust and Genocide Education in Washington state required by 2027. Ask our legislators to address antisemitism and hate by signing in PRO for SB 5851 which will make Holocaust and Genocide Education in Washington State required by 2027. Sign in PRO on SB 5851 before 9:30am on Wednesday, January 17. https://lnkd.in/gi5-fGwE Today, nearly 60% of American adults believe something like the Holocaust could happen again. Holocaust and genocide education is an effective way for students and teachers to learn about, understand, and begin to reduce stereotyping, scapegoating, and hate. Quality Holocaust education has been shown long-term (10 years later) to decrease bias towards and increase acceptance of other cultures. Passing SB 5851 will support teachers struggling to address hate and bias incidents in schools and help Washington State forge a new path towards empathy, compassion, and understanding.
