Political spending is going up on Meta 👀 This is no surprise as we are in an election year and we just had the first debate (if that's what you want to call it 🤦♂️ ) In this video I breakdown how anyone can go to the facebook ads library and look at this data for themselves. For example: Biden has spent over $14 million on ads in the last 90 days. $8 million of that has been in the last 30 days alone. I use this data to get a general idea of how political spend may or may not be impacting my baseline CPMs. There's not much that can be done to change the reality of increased competition but if you are working at a company where you need to explain to executives why ad costs are going up, this can be helpful context. I'll be continuing to monitor political ad spend as we approach November. Don't be surprised when you see ad costs go up. 📈

Did you know there's been over $4.4 billion in AD spend towards political campaigns since 2018? 16,000,000 ads. $4.4 billion in AD spend. Anyone can look at this. Go to Google and type in Facebook Ads library. Click on this first one. Scroll down and click on Go to report. Select your country. I have United States selected. It'll show you this grand total. Here's where this gets really crazy. You can actually see how much each political party is spending if you Scroll down. Select your date range and then you can see how much each page is spending against. Ads I'm gonna select last 90 days. Scroll down. We can see these top two Joe Biden pages are spending. 10 million and 4 million, so $14 million in the last 90 days and about 5678 little over 8000 ads. There's a significant amount of other pages here running ads. If you want to see that as they're running, all you have to do is click on their page name. And it'll open up the page and all ads that are running. I don't love looking at these ads because it makes me super depressed, but here's information that you can use as an advertiser, especially now that we're approaching the election. If you Scroll down to the very bottom, you can download the full report and select your date range and then export it as an Excel file. It's right here. I have two Excel files, one that shows the last 30 days and one that shows the last 90 days. So now if I want, I can come and take a look at these pages for Joe Biden and see how much he spent last 90 days, like $14 million. Compare that to how much he spent the last 30 days, 6788 million of that has been in the last 30 days. This tells me that political spending is ramping up, especially after that first debate. The reason this is important as an advertiser is you can begin to forecast and predict how much political spending can potentially influence at costs across network. This is my third time as an advertiser during an election cycle and I've seen first hand how increased spend from political figures can ramp up competition and increase your CPM's.

Less than 2 weeks ago we got the news that EU is banning Facebook from using user data for personalized ads in EU. And as some predicted (I think I read it under your post Mike Klostermann) Facebook will solve this hiccup by offering: - Facebook for free with opt in for usage of data for ads - Facebook paid version with no advertisement And it did happen, since a few days I cannot access Facebook unless I choose one of the above. Paid version is only 12,99 € a month…

Absolutely agree on simplifying ad metrics. Paired with that concept is getting clear on benchmarking. For example, I use ROAS as much as the next person, but a nuance that's rarely discussed in marketing rooms is determining "good" vs "bad" ROAS. Every company should have a clear definition of what a good ROAS is for their specific business/campaign/growth engine. Here's why: The punchline is, a 2X (or 3X or 4X...) ROAS can be profitable for one business or initiative, and it can fast track another into bankruptcy if unchecked, because the number that really matters at the end of it all is the net profit. Some products/services cost more to deliver to the customer than others, and that number needs to be understood and considered. ✅ Scenario 1—Selling a $1k digital course Ad spend: $10k Purchases: 20 Revenue: $20k ROAS: 2X Gross profit (Rev. minus ad cost): $10k Net profit (Gross minus operational expenses): $5k ❌ Scenario 2—Selling a $200 rug Ad spend: $10k Purchases: 100 Revenue: $20k ROAS: 2X Gross profit (Rev. minus ad cost): $10k Net profit (Gross minus operational/COG expenses): -$2k The first product does pretty good with a 2X ROAS, while the second product loses money with a 2X ROAS because it costs more to produce and deliver. It's also important to know your average lifetime customer value and average time to second purchase when considering ROAS benchmarks and ad budgeting. Marketing execs need to understand this and be able to confidently explain this to their teams and stakeholders.
