What is Ecological Outcome Verified? From the Savory Institute, Ecological Outcome Verified (EOV) provides a holistic assessment of ecosystem health. EOV works on two time scales: annually and every five years. So, it is time consuming and a commitment to achieve this verification. After attending the terrific ReFED Summit #foodwastesummit24 in Baltimore last week, I took the weekend to collect my thoughts and walked away with three overarching insights about the state of the battle against food loss and waste: -         New technology is essential to the fight against food loss and waste, but I walked away from the summit thinking that sometimes, we collectively neglect classic methods of food waste prevention and food preservation like freezing and proper storage. I think there’s room to progress new and exciting technologies while also figuring out how to better deploy what we know already works (and even better, combining the modern with the classic to maximize results!) -         Food waste is ultimately addressed by people. I was struck by something that Kathy Cacciola of Google said, which was about how to get companies to adopt policies and practices across their numerous sites. She used the analogy of flossing – everyone knows that we should floss and that it’s good for us, but actually getting all people to do it twice a day is a pretty big lift! The same goes for companies – how do you shift longstanding practices and then replicate those shifts across hundreds or even thousands of sites? -         Finally, I was inspired by the huge attendance, but also found myself wondering how we reach those companies and communities who haven’t yet jumped into this issue for whatever reason. For that reason I was delighted to see the launch of the US National Strategy to Reduce Food Loss and Waste by Secretary Vilsack, and to hear from Steve Lapidge about the ambitious, exciting efforts by End Food Waste Australia to implement Australia’s national strategy. Systemic action is the only way we’re going to deliver SDG 12.3. And most importantly, congratulations to the ReFED team on a terrific event! It’s amazing to see so many people focused on this issue – having worked in this space since 2012, I could never have imagined so many people being so passionate about tackling this crucial challenge. Let’s all harness that great energy moving forward!

This presents agriculture’s climate footprint well, and best of all, it offers solutions to mitigating those impacts that everyone can change.

I have been working with partners both on a State and National level to address the impacts of food quality on a larger scale. Next month, on November 9, the Federal Good Food Purchasing Coalition is hosting a brief webinar titled Modeling the Climate, Environmental, and Social Impacts of Federal Food Procurement.
