🌱 Are you concerned about #climatechange and #foodsystems? Would you like to be part of re-thinking how to organize ourselves around these issues? Then this Challenge Lab is for you! 🏆 Welcome all to the very first Challenge Lab run by Si. This one will be focused on the wicked challenge of how might we develop place-based climate-resilient food systems. The lab runs over five weeks and allows a cohort of participants to apply systems innovation ideas and methods around this challenge. 🧪 Labs are safe-to-fail environments for exploration. The aim is to maximize learning through constant iteration. The lab process is based on the same method we use to structure all our content at Si. This consists of four main stages, from thinking in systems to mapping and transition design to finally working to build a platform/ecosystem for change. 📅 The lab will run over five weeks starting from May 16th. It's a great pleasure to be part of the editorial team for the 'Community-Based Circular Food Systems' special issue at JAFSCD, alongside Anna Davies, Ñawi K. Flores, Michael Kotutwa Johnson, PhD, MPP, @Jacob Park, and Sarah Rocker. The Journal of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Community Development invites manuscripts aligning with common components of Community-Based Circular Food Systems. We're looking for contributions that: 🔵 Have a clearly defined geographic, demographic, or cultural focus. 🔵 Eliminate silos and functions by fostering a network of diverse stakeholders and co-creating applied research and practice. 🔵 Embrace diversity and bridge cultural divides. 🔵 Involve grassroots and community groups and nonprofit organizations. 🔵 Emphasize sustainable food production, sustainable food processing and distribution, and sustainable food consumption and waste utilization. 🔵 Uplift non-industrial farmers and laborers across the value chain and address the mental health and well-being of these critical stakeholders. 🔵 Integrate Indigenous People and Local Community (IPLC)/Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) knowledge systems through ethical practices (e.g., research governances, data sovereignty). 🔵 Encompass social and economic objectives along with environmental objectives. 🔵 Embrace non-economic transactions, including sharing, reciprocity, and charity, that elevate the dignity of recipients. 🔵 Consider preproduction impacts (such as resource extraction or equipment manufacturing). 🔵 Have established evidence-informed objectives. 🔵 Thwart greenwashing and virtue signaling. 🔵 Incentivize circularity through public policy and through public and private philanthropy. 🔵 Emphasize regionality by bridging urban and rural community interests. 🔵 Engage youth, as they will be impacted by whatever actions we take now. Today we hosted the Virtual Conference “EU agrifood policy - Navigating the next mandate”.   Thank you to all who joined us, and to our panellists. Here are the key takeaways from our speakers: 🔸 Gijs Schilthuis from the European Commission: "Agriculture and food policies have become polarising topics in political and societal debates. It is possible to combine agriculture and protection of natural resources. We must work together and strengthen the dialogue between all parties and stakeholders now and for the future policy." 🔸 Stoyan Tchoukanov from the European Economic and Social Committee: "The fair distribution and the fair share of the profit needs to go to the farmers. That’s the key, because otherwise there will be no way to invest." 🔸 Faustine Bas-Defossez from European Environmental Bureau (EEB): "It's a myth that we must choose between protecting farmers or the environment. We must do both. Ecosystem collapse and climate change are the main threats to future food security and farmer livelihoods. To ensure the long-term viability of EU agriculture strong environmental laws are essential to support farmers in socially and environmentally just agri-food transition." 🔸 Harriet Bradley from Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP): "Adopting sustainable, regenerative agriculture systems is shown to help farmers’ resilience to climate change and support food security. But upfront costs and lack of knowledge are significant barriers to changing farming systems. EU policies and especially the CAP therefore need to put much more focus on alleviating these barriers and ultimately providing support for provision of public goods." 🔸 Emma Calvert from BEUC - The European Consumer Organisation: "The science hasn’t changed since 2019. We, as consumers, citizens and farmers, need this just transition as much as ever for our environment, for our biodiversity and for food security." 🔸 Angelo Di Mambro from Euractiv: "The next cycle will be an interesting converging period. Thrilled to share that I've successfully completed the "Population, Food, and Soil" course from Dartmouth College on Coursera, an insightful journey into the intricate relationship between human population, food production, and soil health.
