One in six adults in the EU have #obesity and over 50% have #overweight. Which countries are the worst hit by the rising obesity crisis? - Croatia and Malta (both 64.8 per cent) had the highest proportion of people with overweight. - Obesity in EU’s 'Big Four' and the UK: The obesity rate was 21 per cent in the UK (2017 data). In the EU’s so-called "Big Four" economies, Germany (19 per cent) had the highest obesity rate, followed by Spain (16 per cent), France (15 per cent) and Italy (11.7 per cent). - Overweight rate was higher in men than women in all countries while the share of women with obesity was higher in several European countries. How decision makers can help in reducing the obesity prevalence in Europe? Preventive measures alone won’t help reverse the obesity pandemic. Policy makers and governments across Europe must look into all available options, including formula foods. In most #OECD countries that collect self-reported #weight data, more than half of #adults were #overweight or #obese and nearly one in five were obese in 2021 (latest available data). #Obesity prevalence was particularly high in the #UnitedStates, with just over a third of respondents saying that they are obese. In #Chile and the #UnitedKingdom rates were just above one in four, while #Korea had the lowest share of people with obesity of the #countries studied at just 4.3 percent. Men were more likely to be overweight or obese in all countries studied, with a difference of 19-20 percentage points between #Germany, #Luxembourg and the #CzechRepublic. According to the World Health Organization, a body mass index (#BMI) of over 25 is considered overweight, and over 30 obese. Obesity is linked to a range of #health issues such as type 2 #diabetes, #cardiovascular diseases, and several common #cancers. The global burden and threat of obesity constitutes a major #publichealth challenge that undermines social and economic development throughout the world and has the effect of increasing inequalities between countries and within populations. 📢 #Obesity has now reached epidemic proportions and it is estimated that by 2030 over one billion adults globally will be obese. Once associated with high-income countries, obesity is now also prevalent in low-and middle-income countries, including among lower socio-economic groups. This study reveals that while progress has been made in reducing underweight in many parts of the world, obesity continues to be a growing concern. With dangerously high prevalence rates across the Middle East, small Island States, parts of the USA and South Africa, it is clear that a multi stakeholder response is needed. The health impacts of obesity are well-known, yet public health, food industry, and government responses have been weak. It's time to take action and consider potential solutions such as GLP-1 agonists. A thought - Japan is a country that got rich without being fat. Based on World Obesity (https://lnkd.in/dDTCMKHb) USA Male obesity rate is 41% and Japan is 7.63%. Hence the question is - which country is actually developed ?, USA or Japan. Same goes for organisations, it might not be usual KPI’s. Higher profits with high obesity is not great. Obesity for organisations can be from various aspects such as happiness of stakeholders and their individual growth. So check your obesity ? Try to define what is obesity for your organization ? As a policymaker deeply concerned about the health and well-being of our nation, I'm compelled to address a concerning trend highlighted in the latest study published by The Lancet. The findings reveal a stark reality: India is grappling with the dual challenge of obesity and malnutrition, posing significant risks to the health of our population, particularly our youth. The statistics are sobering: a significant increase in obesity prevalence among both children and adults since 1990. It's alarming to learn that 12.5 million children aged between five and 19 are now classified as grossly overweight, a dramatic surge from just 0.4 million in 1990. Additionally, there has been a sharp rise in obesity prevalence among adults, especially women, underscoring the urgency of this issue. Such Mal-obesity (as I call it) underscores the intricate relationship between inadequate nutrition and the alarming rise in obesity rates, highlighting the need for holistic approaches to address these intertwined challenges. Addressing this Mal-obesity requires a comprehensive strategy that encompasses education, healthcare access, and policy reform. It's essential to empower individuals with nutritional knowledge, promote physical activity, and enhance healthcare infrastructure to combat this growing health crisis effectively. The prevalence of overweight and obesity in our study was significantly higher compared to previous investigations conducted in Ethiopia, with an overall prevalence of 9.3%. Notably, in private school settings, the prevalence was even higher at 16.2%.

Great study. So the combined burden of underweight and obesity has increased in most countries since the early 1990s. This is driven primarily by an increase in obesity, but underweight still remains a major issue in south Asia and parts of Africa. This is why Access to Nutrition Initiative exists: to help ensure (financial) markets shift and private sector actions improve, leading to a healthy nutrition transition and enhanced access to nutritious foods.
