Every Minnesota licensed lawyer is required by the Minnesota Rules of Professional Conduct to “aspire” to provide 50 hours of pro bono service each year: “Rule 6.1 Voluntary Pro Bono Publico Service Every lawyer has a professional responsibility to provide legal services to those unable to pay. A lawyer should aspire to render at least 50 hours of pro bono publico legal services per year. In fulfilling this responsibility, the lawyer should:” If you are a licensed Minnesota lawyer, are you aspiring to reach that goal?

I find it curious how Big Law focuses on the top law schools. The attorneys every firm craves are the rainmakers. Rainmakers are hustlers, charismatic, sales-oriented, and gritty. They are like this because often they came from families with lesser means, had fewer resources, and did not go to top-tier schools, either undergrad or law school. They had to scrimp and save, fight and struggle, hustle and outmaneuver, and they have large books of business because they fought for every inch. Hire the hustlers, those with grit and perseverance, those who have been knocked down and keep getting up. They will be great for your firm's business development and bottom line.

The crisis in Israel and Gaza is a complicated issue. There is so little we can directly control. But I think we should all agree that there is no room for hate speech in general and anti semitic conduct anywhere, and such conduct should be actively denounced and dealt with by the institutions charged with educating the next generations of lawyers.
