"IT'S JUST AN ANKLE SPRAIN" "You'll be right (in 4-6 weeks)" "There's no fracture on xray, you'll be fine" Just because ankle sprains are common doesn't make them less significant, healthcare professionals shouldn't downplay the injury, especially primary care providers (ED/A&E, and GPs, or first contact Physios). However, ED personnel shouldn't be expected to have to provide medium to long-term advice to these patients. "Just a sprain" told to the patient (or paraphrased by the patient based on their misunderstanding) makes them push on with injury and pain longer than they should, potentially making it more difficult to manage down the track. Here's a little blog I wrote for patients who contact me via phone or email immediately after an ankle sprain wondering what to do, I feel this sort of information is very important and doesn't often get down to the patient. Let's talk about ankle ligament sprains 💥 Ankle ligamentous sprains are the most common acute sport trauma, and the most commonly injured ligament in the ankle is the Anterior Talo-Fibular ligament (ATFL) The role of this ligament is to stabilise the ankle joint and resist excessive inversion and plantar flexion. This ligament is often injured when the ankle rolls inwards at high velocity. 🏃♂️ 💨 There are three grades of ligament sprain: Grade 1: Small tear Grade 2: Large tear Grade 3: Complete rupture A physiotherapy assessment can assist in diagnosis of this injury and provide you with a treatment plan for recovery. Ever thought about checking limb length for patients with Sij pain? Seems like silly question and most of us might say yes why not. But I am damn sure lot of us tend to forget it when it comes to busy practice settings. Had an amazing oppourtunity to see patient with low back pain with all features of involvement of SIJ. Then, I did gillet test it showed decrease in mobility on left side compared on right side. Asked patient to lie down on prone and did observe that area on lower back. But,the exciting part was right sij seemed more elevated compared to left side. I palpated on that area it looked that right side seemed to hypermobile compared to left side on palpation and I noticed the differences in PSIS. Immediately,it poped up on my mind about limb length discripency. On functional testing of limb length it showed right one was shorter compared to left side. Then, I really set back and thought in my mind how long that structures might be affected.Also, recalled about pain on ankle patient was complaining. Today, it really really showed importance of inspection and palpation. ///Take home message/////LLD #physiotherapy
