This volume examines recently built housing projects of notable design that address issues of affordability, social cohesion, sustainability, aesthetics, density, and urbanism. Through critical essays, visual content, and a crowdsourced survey of responses, it provides both designers and the general public with an overview of the forces at play in contemporary design of housing.

I have just completed a presentation that is part of my coursework on urban design theory. This week, we discussed a very interesting topic about informal settlements, specifically life on the sidewalks. Sidewalks in developing countries in Southeast Asia undeniably serve as the center of urban activity. As mentioned by Jeffrey Hou and Manish Chalana (2016) in their book "Messy Urbanism," urban planners need to think from various perspectives. Instead of just tidying up sidewalks, we should enhance and explore the reasons behind the bustle and leverage its potential. This discussion has broadened my understanding of the importance of a more inclusive and holistic approach to urban design, which focuses not only on aesthetics but also on sustainability and community well-being.

The Art of Building Cities ++ [artistic sensibility] Camillo Sitte, an influential urban planner and theorist, expressed concerns about the direction of urbanism, particularly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He feared that urban planning was becoming a purely technical endeavor, focused solely on efficiency and functionality, devoid of artistic sensibility and human-scale aesthetics. Sitte argued that the grandeur of historical urban spaces, such as the Acropolis, derived not only from their monumental architecture but also from their integration into the surrounding environment and their capacity to evoke a sense of place. He believed that contemporary approaches to urban design, heavily influenced by modernist ideals and the industrial revolution, often prioritized utilitarian considerations over artistic expression. -- His reflections underscore the challenges of contemporary urban development, where financial constraints and a lack of appreciation for artistry can stifle creativity.
